Yes, actually, we need to discuss the difference in what people call "normal" guns and the "scary" ones. As Zekeland points out above, you can have identical rifles in the same caliber, but have different looks - one is ok, another one people want to restrict. So, we need to all be on the same page when talking about firearms.
Weve talked lots on handguns so I wont go any further on those, we all have our feelings. You do realize that the M16 is prohibited in Canada because of its selective fire mode right? This is EXACTLY why we need to be very specific when talking firearms because the ability to misrepresent them. Also, what do you call a sniper rifle? Technically, its a rifle with an optic on it. I have a (non restricted) 1944 Mosin Nagant Russian sniper rifle. Its a 7.62 bolt action rifle. Is it ok for me to have? I have a (non restricted) semi automatic M14 sniper rifle that shoots the same caliber. Is it ok for me to have? Both shoot the same round, both can technically be called sniper rifles, what is the issue with them? (If anyone is curious as to what they look like and why the M14 would be scary, google "Mosin Nagant sniper rifle" and "M14 Archangel" to see pics of both of them)
Now, I have to point out, your contradicting yourself. One line you say that people should be prohibited from owning high powered rifles, and the next line you say that we will always be able to own a 306 (I think you mean 308 here) Winchester. The 308 Wincherster IS A HIGH POWERED RIFLE. Any rifle used to shoot at a deer, is a high powered rifle.
Lastly, yes again, what do you call "normal" shotguns? Are you against any kind of gun that can be modified in such ways as the stock, grip, optics, foregrips? Why isn't a tactical Benelli pump shotgun a "normal" gun? Its non restricted, can be pinned to hold the correct number of shells for hunting. The same can be said for the Standard Manufacturing DP12. Pump shotgun, non restricted, can be pinned for hunting (although this one is impractical due to barrel length). Is it not a normal gun? Why shouldn't people be allowed these two?
The point I'm horribly trying to make is, it doesn't matter what a gun looks like, or what a person "thinks" about it. There is a point where certain firearms, like fully automatics shouldn't be allowed into peoples hands, that I can agree to. But, we should have access to shoot them at ranges should we choose. The rest? Well, one semi automatic is the EXACT SAME as another, they just LOOK different. If (and I feel this is the starting point) the Liberals want to start banning one kind of semiautomatic because of what it looks like, they will want to ban them all. Its not right, and its all based on extreme misinformation and lies. Seriously, check out that link I posted earlier, and if you (or anyone) has current knowledge of our firearm laws, you will spit your coffee out laughing at the stupidity of the Liberals and shake your head that these guys think they are changing all the laws for the better.
