Ever wonder why it seems the USA is having a harder time struggling with the COVID-19 virus than other country's. Well here is a picture take from a app called Flight Aware. This is a map of Canadian airspace taken at about 3PM this afternoon. The big 4 engine birds are mostly heavy cargo planes flying between Asia, Europe, and the USA. Most of the smaller ones north bound are flying supplies to northern communities. In all there might be 10 commercial flights, flying from one city to another.

that is very interesting, I don't think the US is taking it as seriously as Canada is.......

I would be interested in knowing what these charts looked like a month ago. It stands to reason, based on population, that US airspace would be 10x busier than Canadian airspace but it is difficult to tell if the current difference is 10-1 or 20-1.

are playing the big role in their issues. When many just wrote it off as just a flu, starting with the President. Now you have many who never question what he says, anything that counters what he says is "fake". You also have the religious in the mega churches who are also downplaying it, and ignoring state health directives. They also have media that's an echo chamber for the President. They are still downplaying the risks.  
 
So ya, there are many reasons why they shot past China, even though China as a population of over 1 billion. Think they now have more confirmed than the rest of the world combined.

in Canada the feds want WestJet and Air Canada to start their flights again and are offering to pay 75% of the wages to make it happen. Hope that gets the kibosh.

Since when have flights been cancelled? I know people who are travelling for Easter from Brandon Airport to see family, and just looked at westjet myself and seems business as usual ?

flights have ended for the most part, domestic is still happening on a reduced scale.

For starters it is highly irresesponsible to be going ANYWHERE for Easter in the midst of all this, and I hope these people you know that are have the common sense to isolate for 2 weeks wherever they are going and again for 2 weeks when they return, to do otherwise is a complete lack of common sense and social responsibility. Amazing how many “Covidiots” are still treating this pandemic like it’s nothing. Likely the same people that will cry out the loudest when someone they know dies from it. Before travelling think to yourself how you will feel if someone dies as a result of their actions. Stay home unless it is necessary to leave the house.

Depending on where they're going, they may be required to self-isolate, not just suggested it like here.  
 
As much as I'm sad about missing the usual Easter, it's unreal how many people are still being socially irresponsible about this.

Lol. Don’t come at me as if they’re my responsibility. They chose to fly, not me. I’m pregnant and working in health care and taking all precautions I can. Calm down.

our provincial government wasn't recommending travel outside of Manitoba and that will include air travel.  
Please people stay away from your family this weekend! You can always drop a meal off at the door if you have elderly parents who might not be up to cooking.  
I see people coming and going in the neighbourhood and it's sickening.

I attached a picture that ranks the selected countries relative to each other according to different stats.  
The numbers are ranks based on current data. So how one country is doing compared to another depends on how you compare them.  
 
Why is USA doing as bad as it is, given that they had one of the best government responses?  
Answer: density, media and culture (high desity areas have the majority of cases) (media sows distrust between people and government) (cultural distrust of authority)

I would hardly say the Americans have had one of the best government responses. Maybe at some state levels, but federally no way.

The governor of Georgia signed an executive order reopening the states beaches. He figures it’s okay as long as people space out per social distancing rules.

give it a few weeks. Orange man will put an order through to open up everything, and everyone go back to work and be "normal"

Really it's shocking how poorly the USA has dealt with this situation. They are putting personal freedom and the economy ahead of peoples lives. They don't seem to care that the most at risk are the poor, the old, the minorities and the medically compromised. It's a selfish everybody for himself, the strong will survive mentality.

Preparation.  
 
Say what you will about our response, but we're still handling this far better than the US did. A response that seems to have been only to take action when the full scope of the issue could no longer be downplayed. A disastrous response that I have no doubt will also keep sabotaging Canada and Mexico's efforts until a vaccine is finally produced.  
 
We may not have been as prepared as we should have been, but I have to hand it to all our politicians of recent . . . everyone is rallying around the common goal of getting through this. Including the official opposition, who wants a more parliamentary approach to the situation.  
And for once, I agree. Keep the leader sharp and make the response (at least in theory) even better.  
 
Kind of trailed away from the original topic. However, not really, considering the impossibility of separating the US response from its internal politics.

The data is available for you to do your own analysis, but keep in mind, mine was done on Friday, April 10.  
 
The purpose of the chart was to make people aware that the number of cases and deaths is not the only way to gauge whether a country's response is working. (eg. deaths/cases or cases/pop both say different things about a response.) Sweden, for example, has a small population, but both of those numbers are unexpectantly high. Canada has been blessed by geography, lower density and a fewer number people traveling to infected countries. If you look at my chart Canada seems like it had the best response. However, that is not the only way to analyze the data. There are many factors that drive the numbers and government response is not the only factor, but it is an important one.  
If the number of deaths is how one gauges government responses than the New York Governor did the worst job. I'm sure none of us believes that.

Sounds like to me, your almost old enough to realize you don't now it all.

The USA is getting payback for voting in Trump. Any country who can vote in a person like that deserves what they get. He fumbled the ball right from the start on Covid and now his Republican Governor cronies are falling in line and listening to him and not the professionals. When your leader is mentally challenged and does not want to educate himself and believes the 1st thing he hears, right or wrong and then goes out and repeats it without any thought of consequences what do you expect. The US is in for a world of hurt and will suffer greatly in deaths and treasure. Another thought is they are way to religious a country and believe prayer and God will protect them which is foolhardy. Blind faith in a non existent entity and a goof is leading them down a path that will surely wound their country more than any other.

If Italy, Spain and France all have worse infection rates per capita, why is the focus on how poorly the U.S. is doing. Is this based on a concern due to their proximity or a need to politicize the pandemic?

I had to call a call center for some trouble shooting. They were out of Texas. I asked the lady how things were down there and she knew personally of 3 people that have passed away from Covid. All with medical issues. She knows how much we are in staying home. She admitted that people down there are not following the rules and staying home. They are still gathering in groups, going out, etc. Well there is no chance of slowing it down if you don't practice distancing.

I am deeply religious and this is not a case of "prayer doesn't hurt anyone". This is a case of people suspending rational thought and justifying it with religion.  
 
I can believe very deeply, and pray and do everything my religion demands, but I can also follow what science is telling me. Many of Trump's followers are NOT doing what science, and frankly their government, is telling them to do.  
 
That is the issue.

Italy, Spain and France are reaching the end of the first wave. The US is still at the beginning. Their size is going to be their saviour, as they are not as dense and concentrated as those countries in many regions.

You must be joking about that right? We were down there for the winter and it was only Mid March before things started to sound serious down there, and then we started to plan our exit!! Before that the only comment Trump would make is it is China disease. Once weather warms up here the 15 people who have it will have recovered and we will be fine....basically nothing to worry about.....There was no indication that a pandemic was coming, they cut off flights with China and they were supposedly screening flights in March, but I happened to talk to many people flying and they were not screened at all either entering or leaving the US. So I think we need to pat our Canadian Govt on the back for all they are doing (and no I personally am not a fan of Trudeau but in his response to the pandemic he is head and shoulders above the showman to the south!!) Trump is a joke and I wish people would stop drinking the kool aid and believing everything that comes out of his mouth. That is the reason the US is not doing as well!! Our Canadian relatives were calling us telling us to get home because they were informed. but we were in little bubble down there and it went from 0-60 in days, and then everyday after that it was a scramble for their counties to catch up and get prepared!!
