Manitoba & Brandon slang
12/8/2008 at 9:48 AM
Just got my copy of the "Manitoba Book of Everything." One of the features in it are several pages of what they call Manitoba slang.
A few of the words/phrases include..
- Buffalo chips - dried pieces of buffalo dung
- A Booter - Rubber boots in water or muck... deeper than the boots can handle. You get the picture
- Dainties - small dessert squares/slices/sweets. My grandma used this all the time.
- Farmer vision
- Sev - 7-11
- Social - re wedding social
They also touch on a few Winnipeg-specific ones such as Confusion Corner and The Phone Booth (MTS Centre).
In addition to wondering if they missed any others that are Manitoba or MB/Saskatchewan, I got to wondering what we would describe as Brandon or Westman Slang.... phrases that if one was new to this area, they might not know what the heck you're talking about.
Stuff like:
- The Aud (Centennial Auditorium)
- The Park (fairly universal for Riding Mtn Natl Park if talking about a road trip)
- at one point, there was a mini movement to have Westman Communications Group Place dubbed the "Cable Box"
Any others?
