Gun registry - I still don't understand!

OK! The initial money spent on the registry was astronomical. Now it's in place. A nominal amount is used to keep it going. MOST police forces like it. Why are so many people against it?
We have to register our vehicles. They were never designed to end a life. But they do. We have no problem with that.
Guns, however, were made to end life. Mostly gophers, deer and other edibles or pests. But can be used to end human life.
Why don't people think about the folks that are there to protect us? Police show up at a domestic dispute where alcohol or drugs are in the mix. Wouldn't it be better to know if there are firearms are on the premises?
The idea of "Criminals don't register their weapons" is a little tired. We know that, and please stop that arguement. Our Protectors NEED to know what they are stepping into. Domestic violence is far more prevelant than organized crime in rural areas.
The sheer notion of refusing to registering a firearm seems selfish. Just beacause "I need this rifle to shoot vermin" doesn't overrule the need for law enforcement to know what might be in store for them.
