CBC is running a news article about a leaked letter on the Liberal's page where Harper calls Kyoto a "socialist scheme" designed to suck money out of rich countries. Article is here:

CBC runs the article fully pushing the idea that this proves Harper doesn't really care about the environment. Fact is, Patrick Moore (co-founder of Greenpeace) and many scientists agree that the Kyoto accord will do little for the environment and it is primarily an anti-globalization agreement. The biggest complaint against the agreement has been that the carbon-credit system essientially rewards heavy-polluters in industrializing nations. We are now starting to see examples of $50 million worth of credits being bought from companies who only need spend $10 million to lower the emissions required. The remaing $40 million can then be used to expand operations, for a net increase in emissions. Better still, they are expanding using inefficient technology that can then be 'upgraded' to gain more credits and the circle continues.

I'd have to say, Harper was dead right to say what he did. Too bad most of the country probably will buy the spin on it since most people seem to assume Kyoto is self evidently good for the environment.
