Bill C-288, Kyoto Circus
2/15/2007 at 3:31 PM
Well, looks like bill C-288 passed yesterday(Feb. 14,07). It requires that the government present a plan to meet our 2012 Kyoto emission goals. The plan of course will require measures that the economy can not bear. Even the Liberals admitted as much while they were in power. The goal of course isn't to get the Conservatives to meet our Kyoto committments. It's to make a big public spectacle of the fact that they can't. At the same time the opposition will no doubt try and hide the other fact, that such a plan does not exist.
Fact is there are really only two ways to meet our Kyoto commitments in the next 5 years. Tax the life out of our economy to shrink it and use the revenue to buy credits from Russia to make up the difference. The other option is essientally shutting down the oil industry. I'm sure the hippies would rejoice, jobless fathers however won't.
All said, in my mind bill C-288 is a big political gambit the opposition plan on trotting out come election time.
