With more and more states in the U.S. legalizing marijuana, it is only a matter of time before our government does the same - it would be idiotic not to.

I know there are a lot of anti-pot people out there; most of them very badly or falsely informed.

I didn't read one comment on this thread where someone said or even implied that medicinal marijuana users couldn't smoke in public: the threads about (non-medical) marijuana legalization, and hence one should assume all comments pertain to non medical use, whether it was specified or not.

But what is the "need" for recreational use? "

The question was supposed to be rhetorical.

There is no "need" for any of that, there's no requirement, they're not essential in any way shape or form.

If someone tells me that they "need" (recreational)marijuana, alcohol or cigarettes, I would tell them that they have an addiction, and that they should get that dealt with.

People shouldn't be referred to as arrogant for being against the need/addiction of substances, and called uneducated.

If they like these things, or enjoy these things, that's different, that's not a "need".

Don't fear legalization. Not all drugs are bad. As a society we need to demarcate what constitutes a good drug from a bad drug. Drugs may be used as tools for guiding self-growth and breaking through psychological hindrances.
Marijuana may be useful in many conditions- Google "Dr. Tod's List"
or "marijuana for severe epilepsy in children"
Psilocybin mushrooms may be useful in treating cluster headaches and be used as a Shamanistic tool for self discovery and healing
MDMA (pure MDMA, NOT street "Ecstasy") has been shown to decrease life suffering for cancer patients
LSD (again, pure LSD (these drugs need to be made by chemists)) to treat and cure alcoholism and possibly other drug addictions
This is not an extensive list, although the journey into a new generation of psychopharmacology begins!

Following along the lines of the OP, I suppose crystal meth and crack would be the drugs to treat that.

You, read scientific data and actually beleive it,lol!
If memory serves me right, I recall lots of scientific data on "climate change" thrown your way on a separate thread in which you would dispute the scuientific facts as garbage.
Something tells me ghat you wouldn't accept a scientific report on the good that some drugs can bring to people.
I highly suggest that nobody spends time researching scientific data for your amusement. The only way to convince you would be to have Harper say that this or that drug cures this or that ailment. From experience I know that Harpers words ring thousand fold louder to you than any scientist.
Someone find me scientific data..... Sheesh!

Don't forget that these are individual states in the US that are legalizing pot. The federal government still regards it as an illegal substance. The problem with that way of regulating it, is that each state will have it's own laws, regulations and rules.

Now, of course we have the same thing in Canada with regards to, say, alcohol. Each province has it's own regulations and that makes for goofy laws - for example, you cannot join a "wine of the month" club that is based in another province because it's illegal to ship booze across provincial lines.

That's why it's better that the federal government in Canada legalize pot and make a standard set of rules and regulations. FWIW, they should do the same for booze as well.
