MPI "pays" car thieves.
5/1/2008 at 7:56 PM
How's this for irony (or any # of other ways to put it).
When any working person under age 65 steals a car, gets in a collision & is unable to work because of injuries, MPI pays income replacement to that person up to 90% of their wage. This applies even if the thief is in custody while "recovering". Ambulance, physio, chiropractors can all be covered by MPI. HOWEVER . . if anyone age 65 & up - employed - gets injured in a collision, whether or not at fault, all that MPI will pay out are pension benefits MINUS any pension benefits actually being paid to the working senior. The Manitoba Tories have presented a bill to eliminate these payments to car thieves but the NDP has rejected it.
I'm interested in others' thoughts on this & would urge all who think this is NOT okay to make that known to Drew Caldwell, Rick Borotsik (& Minister Chomiak as he's responsible for MPI).
