Did anyone see the semi smoking while driving north on Hwy 10 this morning? It passed me in my grain truck, it had a load of hogs on and at one piloint it started giving off a huge cloud of smoke, I'm guessing the brakes came on. They went over a mile and the smoke was so thick traffic following had to cut speed in half. I was ready to put out fire with my extinguisher but it was still going north when I turned to Souris. Hoping the rig didn't go up and nobody got hurt.

Sounds like he had a brake pot fail. Common enough occurrence and he probably had the radio on too loud to notice the air leak you often hear when that happens.

He obviously wasn't checking his mirrors, which he should be constantly doing while driving or he just didn't care. Nothing more than a steering wheel holder.

maybe he thought it best to get into the city so he wasnt trapped on the #10?? just a thought

Or maybe he did and knew what was going on. What is he to do call a mechanic and have them drive out of town and fix a brake pod on the side of the highway? Really the locked brake is already screwed, the tire is screwed, if it keeps driving get it to town and into a shop where it can be properly addressed. Or do you know this person and know what happened and that he purposely ignored the issue?

Ya he very well could of been driving to town and then was going to get it fixed. Service guy will and do fix trucks on the side of the road all the time.  
 
There are also ways to release locked up air brakes, you just have to be careful and know what you are doing. I''ve done it a few times. Who knows if it was even the brakes that were causing the smoke, it could of been something else on the truck.  
 
But If DOT seen him driving down the highway smoking, he would of been in big trouble. Plus it creates a safety hazard for other drivers on the highway.  
 
But really I don''t know what the circumstance are and really I don''t care, its isn''t and wasn''t my problem. You''d just be surprise how many guys are driving around and have no idea they have a problem with their truck or trailer, yet it''s not that hard too see there''s a problem.

The smart competent driver should be able to see the problem, pull over, cage the pot with supplied bolt, clamp air line with vise grips and then go to the nearest shop. Done it myself dozens of time, and I am no rocket scientist.

I don't think the driver realized it. The smoke obscures both lanes to the extent traffic had to nearly stop. Don't think you would keep going.

Lol maybe just needed exhaust burn

Maybe his muffler bearing was seized and overheating :p
