Manitoba Premier Gary Doer says he plans to introduce legislation that will ban smoking inside vehicles when there are children inside, and it seems to have wide support.
Liberal MLA Kevin Lamoureux (Inkster) had already brought in a private members bill asking for smoking to be banned in cars when kids are inside, but it hadn't passed first reading yet.
The provincial government said it intends to introduce new legislation and will add an education campaign and ensure that the law will be enforceable.
There is no real timeline as to when the province will introduce the legislation.
To make sure the law can be enforced, the government intends to consult with police on the matter.
Ontario, Nova Scotia and Alberta either have similar legislation or are working on legislation to make it illegal to smoke in vehicles when minors are present. British Columbia intends to do the same by 2010.
A survey by Manitoba's largest anti-tobacco group in March indicates Manitobans would agree to a ban on smoking in cars carrying children.
Nearly 80 per cent of those questioned by the Manitoba Tobacco Reduction Alliance said they would support a ban on lighting up in vehicles when people under 18 are inside.
67 per cent even support a ban in people's homes when kids are present.
