Another ex-Hutterite Sues Hillside
A second individual is suing the Hillside Hutterite Colony near Brandon.
Rodney Waldner has filed a motion with the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, alleging years of unpaid labour and emotional abuse.
"You work for people who are in control," he says. "There are certain people who have chequebooks, but most have hardly any means to any money.
But you work as much as anyone else, but you don't get wages. So, you're being taken advantage of... it's a factory using you."
Rodney's statements come just two weeks after Killarney resident Junia Waldner filed a similar motion.
"We really believe that we need to speak out about what is actually going on on the colonies," she says. "Having lived there and experienced it, we know it is time that we do it. That's why we're all here, to expose what is going on."
Five other individuals - who have not released their names or colonies of origin - are reportedly moving forward with lawsuits of their own.
All of them claim they were forced to do a variety of manual labour starting at age 15.
"These people call themselves Christians, but now I see it's just a front," adds Rodney. "You use people, you enslave people to do work, and you literally don't get paid for anything."
All seven ex-Hutterites left their respective colonies within a week of one another in December of 2006.
Reps from Hillside were unable to be reached for comment.
