Did you know Groundhog Day has it's origins in Candlemas (a day celebrated 40 days after Christmas, which also happens to be the mid-way point between the winter soltice and the spring equinox)? The groundhog version we have in North America stems from the German tradition of the badger seeing it's shadow (but badgers are relatively rare here, so they used a woodchuck instead).
The English weather proverb from Candlemas is:
If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another fight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter won't come again.
If Candlemas Day be dry and fair,
The half o the winter's to come and mair;
If Candlemas Day be wet and foul,
The half o the winter's gane at Yule.
So yeah, no matter which way you do it, winter's not done with us yet. :D
