Is buying a Class Ring

for your graduation a good idea?
Many families purchase their young student graduates a Class Ring, but the CBC’s I-team claims they are not worth near the price charged by jostin’s to buy one. Mrs. Sarvis bought her youngest daughter a class ring to celebrate her graduation. She said she had one when she graduated and thought she would continue the tradition. She paid over $150 including taxes, but when she asked a jeweler to appraise it, she was told the appraisal cost $40 and the ring was valued at $25. A Jostins representative claimed that most of the value in their rings are in the sentimental value and not in the materials.
CBC showed the ring to Mr.Gerry Gordon, a Winnipeg gemologist with over 15 years experience. He said that the ring was not made of a precious metal, but Lustrium, which is a type of stainless steel, and the stones are synthetic, thus there is not a lot of value there.
Even if you pay $375 for a ring it will only be worth about $150 after an appraisal. In defense of the Jostine company, they do design rings specifically for each graduating class and include several personalized details like your name, the year and the school logo, and so a customer is not just buying metal and gemstones but also service and reliability. I cannot see where any sentimental value can be placed on a new ring. If it was your Great Grandmothers I can see it having a intrinsic sentimental value or if it belonged to someone famous like Gretzky it might have a monetary value. I don’t wear rings, but does anyone else value their souvenir of High school graduation?
