Hi.  
I have a 4-level split and want to finish my basement. We don’t have a history of water in the basement and are wanting to install carpet for the warmth. The house was built in 1965 and has a floor drain right in the middle of the basement. I’m just wondering what others have done in brandon. My options are to install underlay and carpet on the concrete or install a subfloor with dricore then carpet overtop.

We put carpet in our basement with thick, expensive underlay and it’s great. Very warm. The underlay can actually get wet and just be pulled up and let dry then be put down again. We got ours at HD. I would ensure you have water coverage on your insurance as the carpet and underlay alone was $5000 in our case.

You can go either way. I have done TONS of basements with kanga or pad and carpet and they are just fine. And have done some with dricore then flooring of choice. The dricore does help with the warmth of the flooring but it is only about 3°c and just adds an extra cost to your project. With no moisture issues though the cost may not be worth it if you are doing carpet. If you were doing lino or a LVT/LVP flooring then the dricore would be more noticeable for the warmth of the floor

Can you remember what type of underlay it is and what thickness? Ex. 8 pound thickness etc. Also what year is your house?

The underlay we bought was the most expensive stuff they had at HD I believe. It was black and about one centimetre thick from what I recall. Our floor is very  
warm says my wife who is always cold.

Other than the cash outlay I don't think you would ever regret using dricore. Gives you peace of mind re moisture, provides a warmer surface and gives you unlimited options on what kind of flooring to use.
