I am looking for recommendations from people who have installed metal roofing on their homes.  
 
How have you found it for noise inside the home? We should be able to install it over the existing shingles as there is only one layer and from what I have read that helps deaden the noise a bit. The only reason I care at all about noise is that we are most likely going to use the attic space as a loft soon and I worry about whoever gets to sleep up there!  
 
I keep finding references to metal roofing changing the dynamic of airflow but curious if anyone knows what that is about. We have a few vents in the roof now, not sure if it means we have to do away with those or add more perhaps. Sounds like it stops air movement through the roof (breathability) and I am not sure if that is a big issue in a century old home or not??  
 
How was the cost? I do understand it will be costlier up front.  
 
How about durability? Anyone have metal roofing on for 20 years or so and how is it looking/holding up after time?  
 
I have a very steep pitch but not a huge house, so build up of snow is not an issue at all. It is just too difficult to repair/replace ourselves.  
 
Not a huge fan of the look of the stuff, but I am so furious that after eight years I have to replace what was a very pricey roof.  
 
I can't get the "highly recommended" roofer that did the project to return calls, and it seems I have zero recourse to go after anyone for the warranty issue on the shingles - I am just furious that there is no way to make companies be accountable for bad product that far under performed. I should not be replacing this roof for another 15-20 years, I am looking for any way to avoid such a big job again.  
 
Thanks for opinions. I didn't want to bug companies for quotes until I have more ideas from those who have the products.

We had a tin roof put on our house and it still looks great 20 years later! As for the noise it did wake me up when it was raining or hailing. Can't tell you about the price as my dad just ordered the sheets and installed it himself

Our roof is a full two stories and steep pitch, so I will be leaving this one to experts.  
 
I am not sure I am too worried about noise in storms now, I was just thinking if it is a noisy night my son can just move down to the basement or something. (It would make me feel better if he was on a lower level in the storms too)  
 
What about colour? Have you noticed any fading?  
 
I don't think I will be doing one of those crazy bright colours like others do, most likely a neutral but I am curious.  
 
I really don't care if hail dents it, like anything it would add character, but I do worry about it fading out or rusting more than anything.

We have tin on our roof. Ours was put straight onto the rafters when we built. Wish we had put plywood underneath to dull the sound.  
 
It is noisy when it rains but how often do we get rain. We are on a farm with a lot of metal covered buildings and grain bins so it is noisy in the yard anyways if you can call it noise. Sometimes it is a welcome sound when it is dry.  
 
Ours has been on since 1993. It has faded over the years but still looks fine.  
 
When the snow does come off the roof it comes down with a big whoosh. Scares the crap out of you when it happens the first couple of times. The first time it came down pulled the one sewer stack off because is wasn''t braced properly. We had to replace the one piece of tin. We also had a visitor park too close to the house and when the snow came off the roof took the windshield out of his car.

Not sure the sound is going to be as big a deal as I first thought.  
 
As for snow build up - not sure that will be an issue at all as I have never seen any build up ever due to it's pitch, but you never know.  
 
The way our home is situated it should never be an issue even if we do get some snow up there.  
 
My only concern would be if it would rip the eaves and soffit off. Guess those might need to be addressed at the same time.  
 
Who did everyone use? What bugs me is I do prefer to support local, but NONE of the roofing companies in town are affiliated with the MSCA, which in my opinion holds more water with regards to warranties and standing behind their work.  
 
After all, what good is a warranty if your roofer will not honor it and the company that produced the product also has washed their hands of the product? I am a bit gun shy right now.

What is MSCA? I know both Able and Rainbow Eavestroughing do metal roofs.

Our roof is fire truck red and I haven't noticed any fading or rusting

Now if only they could make a red hair colour that would last that long....lol

My mobile has metal roofing-in a heavy rain I can barely hear if it is raining -of course we have blow-up insulation between the new metal and the old flat roof so that dulls the sound. The house roofing is quite new but I have outbuildings that were roofed 15 or so years ago and there is no fading on those.  
 
Frankly I wouldn't go with anything but metal. It sure beats shingles!

we removed our shingles first off.  
Then a layer of ice and snow membrane installed.  
Then strapping, as you want your tin to be screwed into something thicker than sheeting.  
Then the tin.  
We don't find the noise a issue.  
We like how we don't getting icing up near the edge of the roof now in the winter.  
The snow sticking on the roof is not a issue.  
Order about 5 extra sheets, 20% more screws, and sheets for the peaks and valleys.

We have a steep sloped roof also, snow landslides off and wish we would have put on the pieces to slow that down. Just looks likes angle iron. Contractors put right over existing shingles. Been on for 20 with no issues.
