Good morning everyone,  
 
I am looking for a reasonable family lawyer just like everyone else. I have called a few lawyers and they are saying I am looking at $1500.00++ for a separation agreement. I can not afford this and I am wondering if anyone knows a lawyer that does it for less then this. I was told that an online separation agreement is not the way to go because it is not updated.

Place in Winnipeg sells these. It is hard to find as they operate somewhat anonymously.

Mine was much cheaper than that. Have you sat down with your ex and split everything up to your satisfaction? That's what we did and just needed a lawyer to make it "official". If you're fighting over every asset it could be costly.

consider it a fantastic investment....I once married an idiot...marriage was just a short thing...best $1700 I spent was on the separation...can't remember the cost of the divorce, but man...didn't know what was better, unloading that useless dope of a man, or the paperwork after spending a couple of thousand for the divorce....money well spent

No, we are not fighting over anything. We are friendly with each other and have most of everything worked out. I was told we don't have to have everything worked out. Did the lawyer have to type up the agreement or what did you guys do?

We got a typed up document. Separation agreements aren't required to file for divorce though so not everyone needs one.

I paid $5000 at least for my lawyers fees, as my jerk ex fought me for everything. My lawyer was awful and didn’t care that his lawyer kept on postponing things and dawdling for months on end. It took three years for me to get a divorce! I got shafted by both my lawyer and my ex. So glad I never had kids with that jerk. I wish you better luck. I know it sounds weird but I went to a legal office for my divorce. Was very broke. The head lawyer said they had just hired someone out of school and their rate was cheaper than a senior lawyer. I used that girl to write up my divorce get my ex to sign and she put in it he had to pay half. If he would of fought for stuff it could of been worse but luckily he signed and paid half. Total was $1000, I paid &500 approx. yes that’s a discounted rate in Brandon.

if you have everything worked out and everything is mutual then work out the terms of the separation agreement with your ex partner. Go down and apply for the separation agreement form yourselves and if you dont know how to fill out get a paralegal to draft it (way cheaper), or ask on how to do so at the court office. The only thing is waiting the time needed for it to go through depending on situation. Lawyer only needed if disputed for monetary and superficial items and to make official.

You should ask if an agreement is necessary. If there's no kids and no-to-very-little assets, and you've both divided everything to your mutual satisfaction, it may not be needed. When I divorced years ago, that was the case. I was even able to get a mortgage etc on my own after we separated, but before we divorced, with no separation agreement as long as I could establish we had separated our finances.

You do not need to waste your money on a lawyer. Lawyers will suck the life out of you.
