We are new to the area and will be looking for childcare in the New Year for our One year old. Any thoughts or good recommendations for us??

Your best bet would be to look under the childcare section of this site and phone around.  
 
The online Registry seems to work for some people and they find spots, but others have reported sitting on it for a long time.  
 
Another option if you have Facebook, look up the child care groups on there.  
 
There quite a few really good reputable private home based daycares around Brandon, some are licensed home care but don't provide subsidy, and the very rare one does.  
 
If your family has a vehicle and the means to get around the city, don't just look with in your area, look around. I know we found a spot no where near where we live and our provider is absolutely amazing.

The posted above me has good ideas. Don't get too hung up on getting something in the neighbourhood, especially with an under-2. There are quite a few home daycares in the area (I live in Riverheights as well, and see them out and about during the day), but with so few spaces for under-2's they're hard to come by.

Agree with the above...don’t limit to just the neighbourhood, unless transportation is an issue. It’s really only about 15 minutes max from anywhere in town.  
 
Facebook has a couple childcare pages and there’s the section here on eBrandon.  
 
Message home daycares and ask if you can read their contract and policies. Set up meetings with the ones you like and agree with and then go ready with specific questions based on their program and policies.
