Is this standard dental Practice in Brandon?

I took my 3 yr old son to the dentist today. He, sadly, has a cavity and is in pain with it. We're having trouble brushing his teeth and certain foods are causing him great discomfort.
So we got to the dentist and waited a while, as I expected, since we didn't have an appointment. Confirmed Cavity, luckily no abscess or the tooth would need to be pulled apparently.....now he needs another appointment.
I go to the desk to make an appointment and I'm told the earliest they can get him in is October 25th....what??? He's in pain and wouldn't taking a month put him at greater risk of developing an abscess?
Just as a side note....no other dentists in this practice would take my child earlier, the two they asked suggested he go only to this one person who fills kids teeth, one day a week. He was not a problem in the office either----no screaming or crying etc.
So my questions are; is it normal for dentists in Brandon to take a month to fill a cavity in a child's tooth? And....can anyone recommend a great dentist that will fill a 3yr old's tooth, hopefully a little quicker.
