Parents make all sorts of choices which directly, or indirectly, affect the lives of their children. I can think of other things which can lead to physical or emotional scars that may affect a person later in life.  
Just wonder if we did a survey of every man who had been circumcised, how many of them would be resentful of their parents decision.

All of you who keep referring to not having the child's consent, do you even have children? How often do you ask for their consent?  
 
I didn't ask for my sons consent when he got circumcised but his father who had the same procedure done wanted it done. I also didn't ask for his consent to have surgery on his stomach at 1 month or surgery to remove adenoids at 3 years. I don't ask his consent when he gets vaccines or needs any kind of medical procedure done (he would say no if I asked). I don't ask his consent when he doesn't want to clean up, doesn't want to go to nursery school, or have a bath. I as a parent made the decision that he needs to do these things. these are our children and we don't give a flying f*** what anybody else thinks about the choices we make for our children. We are not doing anything illegal so it's none of your business.

What do you feel about female genital circumcision? This procedure entails removal of the citoris, which is embryonically homologous to the foreskin, meaning it's the male-female version of the same thing.

is there any medical reason for female genital removal?  
 
im not for it I'm just curious because as far as i know there isnt and I see that as the difference, however the risks associated with not circumcising the penis are very small imo however there are some complications so that i think is the other side of the coin

Exactly! That's what makes us parents, not just making babies but making the decisions for them until they are old enough to do so is what makes us parents. I don't resent my parents for their decisions they made.

My son was born in Ontario and it is no longer covered there. I'm surprised it is here. You have to pay for the procedure as it is not medically necessary and therefore not covered.

Female genital mutilation is nowhere near the same thing as male circumcision. It often i:ncludes sewing shut the genitals (as well as removing possibly all external genitals) leaving only a small hole, than cutting it open for intercourse once they are married and for childbirth. It is often done in unsanitary conditions and can be done anywhere from birth to puberty. It's basically done to control woman and show them off as a status symbol. It is also illegal in most if not all countries, even though lots don't follow the law.  
 
It does not even compare with male circumcision and to say it does is absurd.

More common than some people want to believe.

For everyone saying don't circumcise think long term. Think of being an adult in a care home and the skin is no longer elastic, it doesn't want to retract. Some poor aide tries to pull it back to clean it and the pain. Or as an adult you don't clean your pecker properly eventually it won't be able to be pulled back either. Sorry to say but a lot of boys don't learn to clean it properly or don't continue to clean it properly and the skin tightens and causes problems. Than you have to eventually get it removed which adds to more complications like the tip also being cut off, things stitched improperly, higher risks for infections . Just saying a lot of long term issues could have been avoided.

I remember when a close friend had a baby 3 or 4 years before I did, circumcision was fully covered for infants.  
 
When I became pregnant in 2007 and didn't find out the sex, I researched circumcision in case I had a boy and it was no longer covered at all. You had to pay for the doctor and hospital.  
 
So clearly something changed with Manitoba Health to decide to cover it again. I'm glad they do cover it.

Here is a link to a recent Huffington Post article detailing the unanimous voice of Danish doctors that boys should not be circumcised until they make the choice at the age of majority. 99.5% of males will have no health issues with an intact foreskin.  
 
The majority view of physicians around the developed world is that this should not be a routine procedure.

I disagree with previous posters that they think parenting means making decisions on behalf on children, without consent. I disagree. Our jobs as parents is to get them to adulthood- all of them, not just the pieces we find acceptable, until they are of an age to decide what they want to do with their own bodies. We are the guardians- so start guarding more. Your opinion does not allow you to make permanent esthetic decisions for your child''s body.

There's different types of FGM, what you've described is an uncommon extreme form of the procedure, for the vast majority of the 200 million women and girls having undergone circumcision/genital amputation/mutilation whatever you want to call it, it was removal of the clitoris, in this form it prefectly mirrors male circumcision

Perhaps we should start having our childrens teeth pulled out, so that they don't have to experience the dental issues related to old age and poor dental hygiene.

There are people that already do this. When the kids hit early teens, they take them in, have their teeth pulled and get dentures.

I know several people who do get their teeth pulled before they get too old for that exact reason.
