Is it socially acceptable to be stoned around your children?  
 
Is this a safety issue?  
 
It is going to be legal for recreational use of marijuana here soon.

If you are referring to pot, I have never smoked it, but I also think everybody is going to be just fine, including the kids.  
 
I know people tend to be afraid of the things they might not understand, but when I see the majority of the population on synthetic medications prescribed by doctors for a variety of medical ailments, to be honest I find that threat more concerning than the effects posed by a natural plant, and especially when that plant is known to have much more success treating certain medical ailments that the pharmaceutical industry simply, cannot replicate.  
 
Look at the history of pot, and you will begin to realise that it was outlawed way back in the day from pressure by the pharmaceutical industry. Follow the money, and you will begin to see why many people often think this way.

To be quite honest, I find it more offensive that there are people in prison under life sentences, often blacks, who were charged with possessing small amounts for personal use. Taxpayers should also be offended that they are paying hefty amounts in tax dollars for the costs associated with incarcerating these prisoners, when all they have done is be in possession of a naturally growing plant. How heavy handed, unjust, and perverse.

a parent I would not like my children to see me if I was stoned on weed, especially if it was all the time. Who wants a zoned out parent?  
Same goes for alcohol, it's one thing to have a couple of beers and be happy but once you cross that line.....  
You talk about meds, some people need their meds to deal with various health issues, many are sick and need help, totally different than someone abusing T3s or whatever.

Theres a difference between getting stoned and medicating with marijuana. Generally when people, including parents, use cannabis as a medication, they are not getting stoned to the point most people assume. A small toke is not going to impair a person beyond the ability to care for your kids. And it is way less of a risk than parents being on many of the pharmaceutical medications so many people are prescribed for depression, stress, anxiety, pain, etc. A child could die from getting ahold of most pharmaceuticals, they would not die if they ingested cannabis, in plant form or edibles.  
I dont believe with legalization comes an increase in parents getting “stoned” around their kids.

Recreational Marijuana will become Legal on July 1st 2018, and stores will be able to sell it as of July 2nd 2018. (Manitoba Government currently only plans to approve 4? I believe dispensaries for MB by July 2nd 2018.)  
 
Medical Marijuana has been legal in Canada ever since 2001 just as an extra tidbit of information.

People are already smoking weed around their kids or stoned in their presence. Legalizing pot isn't going to make whatever is going on now change. And it's people of all ethnic, social and economic background.

Not acceptable to be stoned around your kids, or drunk in my opinion. If mom/dad is doing this then it shows them that its OK. As parents aren't we supposed to talk to them about the hazards, severe health implications and the negative aspects of drugs & alcohol??

Alcohol is legal and soon so will marijuana......smoking weed or drinking alcohol in front of your children do not make you a bad parent. Getting impaired and not being able to look after your children is another story. Marijuana has a bad rap.......I don’t think it’s any worse than drinking. I have a beer in front of my kids and if I smiled, id do it too

Everyone should read and learn more based on the facts. Synthetic meds bring on the most horrific side effects!

I wouldn’t want my kids around someone who is stoned or drunk. If they are having a drink yes, and maybe even some puffs of a joint...but using common sense would be needed here.  
 
Not to change the subject....but I am far more worried about people walking around like zombies with their faces in their phones......that will likely have an effect on the social development of kids down the road....all of those zombie unavailable adults everywhere!

I have a few family members who are on medical marijuana. They are technically “stoned” while around my child. My child doesn’t know any different and either would I if I didn’t know. I was very against marijuana becoming legalized before. I had only tried it once many years ago. Since watching the transformation of my family members off of hard core pain medications and onto marijuana my opinion has drastically changed. A person can still function on marijuana quite well. They aren’t walking around in a stoned fashion, they work and function just like normal. You might be surprised at how many people you interact with on a daily basis who use marijuana in one form or another.  
 
That said I do not want a bunch of people sitting around smoking up in my home. It’s treated no different than a cigarette and you take it outside.  
 
I really don’t think legalization is going to change things much. People who will do it do it now.

The only thing common about common sense is that we all think we have it. I remember a client telling me that he did not know of one family friend or relative that did not use drugs (soon to be legalized). And we saw a number of them on the othwr side of our desk applying for welfare. Seemed to relax them and take away motivation to work

People with no motivation to work with have no motivation regardless of using marijuana.  
 
Medical marijuana is not cheap. It costs $400 a month for one family member and the other one spent double that for a month. It is not covered my any drug plan and is all out of pocket. It’s $9 a gram, not sure what street cost is on marijuana.  
 
Like I said you would likely be surprised as to who actually uses it. I guarantee they are not all on welfare. A lot of hard working people use it - medically and recreationally

we'll see a lot of changes, LOTS of people smoke it and likely people you least expect, you can't aways tell someone is "stoned". I was one of those people who was against it and also thought the medical part of it was bunk. THAT is until I tried cannabis oil for myself for a chronic condition. It keeps my pain away and I'm alert and fictional and I have kids who are 100 percent taken care of. The meds I take cause brain fog and an overall unwell unpleasant feeling that leave me almost feeling worse then before I take it. I function 100 percent better on oil then I do on what my dr has given me. Seem like a no brainer. I have also seen what amazing things smoking pot, eating edibles etc can do for cancer patients. I for one am happy that this will be a legal option for people. Like mentioned above, it's not a cheap option but I will take it any day over prescribed pain killers that leave me feeling almost worse off.  
 
And as for smoking around kids....you don't generally get plastered in front of your children so why would you get stoned around them. I think for the most part people will be responsible just like they are with alcohol.

With marijuana there will be no difference than what is happening now. We will see a rise in users as people will want to try it for the sake of trying it. The novelty will wear off for some and they will not use anymore. By legalizing it it makes the buzz more controlled. I have spoke with people that have a somewhat negative experience due to younger days of getting just wasted on it. That is not the case anymore. There are so many strains out there that do so many different things. I know younger will try the most potent just to say they have done it, but chances are they won't like it nor have fun. Too strong and the person will be a vegetable glued to the couch or in the bathroom puking from being too high. Just like being younger buying the 7% beers as you can get drunk faster and cheaper, tasted like crap and was no fun. Now when legal you can buy softer fun strains that won't knock you on your butt such as sativa strains, indica strains are more for relaxation, hybird strains that give the best of both worlds, CBD strains are more on the medical side for relief, etc. It is like taking a 200mg tylenol, extra strenght 400mg, T3, etc.

Being stoned or drunk in front of children or when they are in your care is not acceptable.

nothing wrong with being a little high around kids. do your bloody research. people are probably a better parent with a little weed in their system. id rather be a little high around my child then drunk. you people who are against it have probably never even tried it. so shut up.

Did you do research high. I said neither was acceptable. I can not believe being under the influence during emergency situation is better than sober

I will be the first to admit I thought marijuana was horrible. How terrible it is to even think legalization was a good idea. I now have 2 very close family members who are on it. I cannot believe how wrong I was. It is amazing and I am a strong advocate for it now. I think the government has kept this a big secret for far too long. Instead the doctors push these pills that have extremely terrible side effects. It’s all a money grab to them and that’s why they are dropping the ball when it comes to proper legalization.

Many studies have shown that regular cannabis use can impair the brain's ability to produce the motivating "reward chemical" dopamine, which is usually produced during and after pleasurable experiences, such as career or athletic accomplishments.  
Basically: produce less of this chemical = feel less pleasure accomplishing tasks.  
 
Study by Californian university followed children from birth up to age of 38, and found that people who smoked more than 4 joints a week were:  
 
More likely to be lower paid and have relationship and behavioral difficulties.  
 
Ended up in a lower social class than their parents.  
 
More prone to be in less skilled, less prestigious jobs and to run into debt.  
 
There's many other negative effects of marijuana, in particular to the developing brains of adolescents, but for sake of brevity I just encourage motivated individuals to research it themselves, I suggest scholar.google.ca

not one doctor that I have asked had said that they will be willing to prescribe.

I was under the impression that local doctors can’t prescribe it not because they won’t but because they can’t.

The only thing in your post that is not WRONG, is how certain scents trigger comfort.

I know of at least 2 people that were recently prescribed Medical Marijuana, and from doctors in Brandon.

The reason you have a hard time finding a local doctor to write a pres:cription is because until they receive training on it they are mostly reluctant to prescribe something they don't fully understand.  
 
However there is NO RULE that says they CANNOT. Its all a matter of your Doctors willingness to put his Medical License on the line because you might not actually be looking for "Medical" Cannabis, and are just looking for an excuse to get high legally under the disguise of "Medical" Cannabis.  
 
That being said there is a local doctor but I don't know who she/he is.  
 
Growers N Smokers on 18th street has or had access to a Doctor who will provide pres:criptions for legitimate users, the best way to find out would be by contacting them.

The first one is a study on mice, which doesnt always extrapolate to humans  
 
Second confirms that pot doesnt shrink brains. Ok that's good  
 
Third confirms pot doesnt change physical structure of brains. Ok that's good too.  
 
The fourth says that when a city in the Netherlands banned pot-shops from selling to foreign nationals, the percentage of foreign students passing their exams increased from 73.9 percent to 77.9, then it goes on a speculative ramble on other possible reasons for this.  
 
All these are from a marijuana publication that will of course have an biased agenda, and not contradict what I wrote.
