am close to someone that witnessed the attack and from the accounts that were told to me, I don't think there was any remorse for the 81 year old woman that was knocked to the ground and had her little dog ripped from her by this persons dogs. I also am not sure if our police force is going to charge the person for not having their animals on leash or for assaulting a senior citizen on the way to her little animal. I think the senior now has to hire legal council to recoup any costs incurred for her injury and ambulance ride and for the on site vet services trying to resuscitate a dying dog. Not to mention all at Kin Park that had to watch and hear the cries of that poor dying dog. In my world you kill my dog, yours get euthanized. Especially now that they have a taste for blood. They will do it again!

Should be put down

For all those involved. I have large breed dogs and am very careful with them. They have never hurt anybody nor gestured to. However animals are unpredictable most of the time!! I think owners don’t take enough care with their animals. I agree the dog in this situation should be put down. The owner should be held accountable for this horrible thing. I hope this dear woman is alright today.. ??  
I gather she lost her dog?  
 
I just feel sick hearing about this!

Why the hell weren't those two dogs seized? There needs to be an investigation!  
 
Sounds like the owner is not responsible and shouldn't be owning big dogs that have the potential to harm small dogs!

I am praying that both will be okay, but am very worried about that little dog that was so viciously attacked. As the owner of a similar dog, this is a fear of mine every time I take him out for a walk. Were these two big dogs on the loose? The owner should be charged. Very sad situation.

As a dog owner and living in that area in makes me scared to walk my dogs in this area. Deffinitly will be watching for these types of dogs.

The south end of the city is the only area without a fenced in dog park. Perhaps it's time to build one.

The owner of the big dogs should have been charged on the spot. According to the paper article these dogs have been reported as "roaming" more than obmnce prior to this. Someone needs to make sure that they do not ever roam again. I would suggest they be put down now-if they were mine, i would do it myself. Mine are taught to be protective of their home but they would never attack this way-of course they would never get the opportunity either!

how do you allow large dogs that do something like that to roam that close to a splash park anyhow.

are not socialized to deal with other dogs. A dog park would not be a benefit in this case. You are missing the point.

for someone to narrow in on the pitbull aspect. Educate yourself, pitbulls are not banned nor should any breed be banned. No one is at fault here except the owner of those dogs. Research your breeds before you get them. Just because the dog is cute, doesn't mean you can raise it properly. Some breeds need a very experienced handler. Its when the inexperienced get their hands on dogs they have no business owning, things happen. These dogs should not have been roaming, nor should any dog for that matter. Accidents do happen and dogs get lose but by the sounds of it, these dogs have gotten out several times, which should not be happening. The owners should be charged and heavily. My thoughts are with the elderly lady and her pup. This was 100 percent avoidable.

It was my little grand daughter that was with her babysitter when those f**k**g dogs came running at them..their damn lucky it wasn't me there at that time..it wouldn't have been pretty for the dogs...

My neighbors had a pit bull and that thing was terrifying. Some dogs bark...actually almost every dog in our neighbor hood barks but you know it's just saying "HEY..HEY YOU...STAY OUT OF MY YARD!!!" but this thing next door would attack the fence between our houses and frantically dig and try to squeeze through the boards and pace around trying to find away out to get at us. My Golden Retriever would just kind of look at the fence and then look back at me with a look on his face like "What's wrong with that dog?"  
 
I don't have any idea why you would CHOOSE a pitbull or variation of one. Look in the classifieds right now and you'll see the types of people that buy them...1 year old pitbull for sale, rehoming 2 year old pitbull...pitbull in need of new home. It's always the same type of person who buys one of these dogs to show people he/she is not to be messed with and after a few months when the fun wears off or the dog has bitten their child or someone else's it's off to the classified section.

I agree these two big dogs should not have been running out free. If they are the ones attacking smaller animals then I would also agree that they be put down.  
 
I’d like to throw out something to think on. What if these two Dogs were just coming up to be friendly and it was the little dog who initiated the attack. If the little dog was poorly socialized it could have initiated the attack with the other two dogs. It doesn’t matter big or small if a dog of any size is aggressive with other dogs the other dogs are going to take that dog on. It is just the nature of Dogs to do so. Once a dog gets into that heightened state of mind it can not think clearly. People always assume big bad dogs are to blame and sympathize with the poor little dog. But a dog is a dog no matter what size. If the owner does not socialize their dog and it becomes dog aggressive or people aggressive it will always be at risk when out in public.  
 
As for the previous comments on banned pit bulls shame on you!!!!! No breed of dog is more aggressive than others. It is how the owner trains that dog. Banning specific dog breeds is just stupid.

Wow! I hope the lady and her dog will be okay. This was such a sad story to read. I hope the owner is charged and will be banned from owning other pets. The dogs should be taken away and checked for behavior problems. I know everyone has different opinions on this situation towards the animals. I feel dogs act by how they are raised and treated. If, a dog is not socialized or treated well then they will be aggressive. But, if a pet is loved and taken care of and properly trained they will be the most lovable pet that a person/family can have. My friend has a pitbull and that dog is so loving and loyal. I am not starting a discussion war with everyone I am just voicing my opinion. I prey that the lady and her dog will be okay.

Give your head a shake to knock some sense into it. They ran across the park and knocked an 81 year old woman to the ground on the way to her dog. Several people had to try and protect her and her dog. there was no sniffing or nipping. It was a full out speed attack. These dogs were set to kill. And yes some breeds have a predisposition to aggression or they would not be banned in certain cities. I hate when some dog owners feel "not my dog" regardless of breed.

You are so wrong..my grand daughters dog does not initiate any attack when these animals came running at them..you're an idiot plain and simple!!!!!!

I am just offering another perspective. As I said at the beginning of my post if these dogs are responsible then I agree they should be put down.  
 
But I have been a dog owner for over 20 yrs. One thing I have learned is that most people are very ignorant when it comes to dog ownership, dog training and the fact that their dog is a dog not a human. Dog behaviours are far more complex than we realize.  
Btw a big dog will knock most people down. It doesn’t take much to knock an 80 yr old lady down. I am sorry this happened to her and hope she is ok

I also want to point out that almost all Dogs when they see another dog run up to that dog. Look what happens at dog parks. How most of the dogs greet new Dogs entering the park. It is normal dog behaviour. It is also the point at which a fight will occur.

I have first hand accounts of this situation and it was not a friendly butt sniffing gone bad! People are traumatized. A dog is gone. A family has lost a companion. And as the paper says these may be repeat offenders.

But this is the perfect opportunity to have a public discussion on understanding dog behaviours and hopefully preventing future attacks. eBrandon is a public forum which is the perfect place to for these discussions.

You don’t ban a bread of dog. All dogs can be aggressive, often it is how they are raised, need to ban owners not breeds. I had a large dog years ago. My dog was tied in my yard when my neighbors little terrier dog decided to jump the fence and fight my dog! Unfortunately the little dog didn’t Fair so well.  
I’m sure the owners will be fined. I was fined and paid the vet bill for the damaged dog. Even though it happened on my property and my dog was tied up, I was still considered responsible for my dog. My dog was not an aggressive dog he was just protecting himself. My neighbor apologized to me, he said his dog has a habit of being aggressive, he had an attitude that he was going to be the big dog on the block. So it’s not just pit bulls people!  
My sympathies to the lady and her dog. Yes it is scary being attacked by a dog. If they know who the owners are they will be charged, unless the laws have changed in 30 years.

Just singling out one breed wont fix the problem, we need laws that make the owners responsible for their negligence, just putting their dog down doesnt cut it,they should be held accountable for damages from their negligence, they need to cover this woman's loss of her dog, and her medical bills, medications, counseling, what ever she needs to recover,l even if its a Chihuahua that did the damage .

So many people take for granted having pets or even children. We all should have to take some training or education on parenting for children or animals. No I am not putting kids at the same level as animals I am just making the point that we should educate ourselves on the responsibility of taking care of others not take these jobs lightly!

I could not agree more. As a dog owner you have to be responsible for the actions and where about's of your pups. Now as for the people saying that big dogs should be put down. Please do your research. Most bites involving people are usually caused by miscommunication on part of the person. People miss read dogs all the time. Would you go up to a bear and pat it's head, no so why do it to a dog you don't know. Animals can't just say leave me alone. There are study's that say people with little dogs have a fear of larger dogs and because of this they tend not to socialize their little dog with other dogs so they never learn how to interact with big dogs. as well as their owners don't know how to act around large dogs and may even cause the situation to be more aggressive. Now it is terrible what happened here and the only person at fault is the owner of the large dogs.
