Stray cats

We have yet another stray around our property and we would like to keep this little guy. He has gotten used to us yet won't let us pet him though he has swiped my hand lightly a few times..our last stray cat we got him into a cage by a ball of yarn. What is the best way to catch a stray cat at home without animal control as we have plans to keep this cat and give him a vet exam. Thanks.
