As a first timer who is interested in adding a fuzzy companion to his life in the near future I find the pet market to be a very confusing situation.  
 
Unfortunately my favorite breeds of choice are of the small dog variety, so they seem to be the most expensive naturally.  
 
There seems to be a very distinct weight to price factor with dogs, and the ones I like happen to be in the $2-5000 range which blows my mind.  
 
I often wonder if people actually pay those wonky prices, or do those pups sit for a few months before the breeders end up dropping the price and I just don't see the ad later ?  
 
Then there are the cat ad's, 97% of which are free, kinda wish I was a cat person but frenchies, bostons and pugs can't help but bring a smile to my face

There’s nothing wrong with a hienz 57. I have two and they are perfect.  
 
Anyone that wants a dog and doesn’t wanna pay an arm and a leg look to adopt one. We have a foster fail. Best dog I’ve ever owned. Better then any dog I’ve bought.

To these $1000+ puppies that don’t sell? I don’t even want to think about it. To a non-breeder are they just livestock to make money as a side-hustle?

Mutts are great dogs. To me a mutt is a dog of cross breeds. Most that I have seen for sale on here are just that. Two to three different kinds of dogs. Dad is this two kinds of dogs and mom is two kinds of dogs. It’s a mutt or hienz 57 they used to be called. But they still want 900 or 1000 for the dog. No papers or anything. The sad thing also is people are paying this price and making the dog market really high. It’s sometimes hard to adopt a dog also as you basically have to live in town with a fenced yard as if you live on a farm or acreage you don’t get to adopt.

One At A Time Rescue adopts to farms. They are great to work with. They ask that your dog be part of the family and not left on its own outside or tied to a tree. Which, I think is very reasonable. The adoption fee covers the spay or neuter.

A real breeder does genetic testing, selective breeding, registers, and offers a health guarantee for their puppies. They will support you before and after you take puppy home because they love the breed. Their effort is worth the thousands, in my opinion. I saw an ad on here the other day for $2000 for golden pups. Not registered. Mother had 10 puppies - that’s 20 grand. That’s insane and I can’t believe people are paying it.

that is mixed breed is a mutt! And I've seen cases where there are four different breeds listed for the parents of a pup! And they charge and arm and a leg for them!  
 
All we've had is mutts, loved them all to pieces too!

I have seen legit 2K Golden pups. The mom is a North American field trial champion that trains and competes all over North America. Same with the stud dog. These would be the best of the best for field/hunting lines of this breed.  
In fact they may cost more per pup.  
 
In this case the price is justified. Many would be scared away by the price. That’s fine. They are not simple house dogs at that price and require lots of training for future hunting/training purposes.  
 
Now the 2K golden pup from Manitoba is just a rip off. No papers. No guarantees. Covid is giving backyard breeders the chance to be more greedy  
 
I have said it before, I’ll say it again. The city needs to outlaw all breeders and get this under control. Breeders should be registered and licenced and all that crap.  
Until there is some sort of control on who’s breeding and what they are breeding it will only get worse

There are way too many people using their dogs as a money making venture. I think most of these people do not think they are doing anything wrong. I got into a heated discussion once with someone who truly believes she is providing families with good family dogs. If you are looking for a 'purebred' or a single breed dog, it is best to do your research and get your dog from a reputable breeder. These breeders do everything said in Navithefairy's post. These are well cared for dogs and if at any time you are not able to care for the dog a true breeder will take the dog back and rehome it in a good home. Yes you will expect to pay more for these dogs. They will come with a health certificate.  
Too many 'breeders' claiming to breed purebreed dogs are poorly educated and are resulting in increased genetic problems and health problems in single breed dogs. That is why it is important to do your research.  
Of course there is also nothing wrong with getting a Heinz 57. They are wonderful dogs too. Some of these dogs will be great health-wise while others will also come with health problems. Designer dogs have elevated the price of some cross breeds. People will pay for these dogs which supports the market.  
 
I love dogs!! They are a wonderful addition to any family but require the attention and care. Do the research into who you are buying from.

They are very strict and heavy fines for non licensed breeders. This would take care of a bunch of breeders around here for sure

I agree prices are nuts. Should have been a dog breeder instead of flipping homes. Way more money and lot less work

Agree this is a make-money project only. Someone must be buying: often see "sold" or "only one male left" (advertising ploy?). Give your head a shake people: the pound/rescues don't need more animals & totally agree that is the place to 'shop" for a dog unless want purebred FROM REGISTERED BREEDER & YOU'VE VERIFIED THIS!

I guess its supply and demand but lots of greed on emotion from cute puppies. And I have no problem with dogs that are cross bred. In fact, some of the best dogs I have ever had have been mixed breeds. Some purebreds from unethical owners are almost inbreeding a bit to much. Not saying all but some, and some genetic health problems sometimes happen where that won't with some mixed breeds. But the fruity mixed names people put on their pups too. I have a horse background and same thing, mixed breed horses are often sturdier and healthier but if I cross a saddlebred with and appalosa, I don't advertise it as a saddlepalosa!

Couldn't believe the price I seen on those golden pups. What a rip off. I've had 3 now and never paid above 400 on any of them. I think ebrandon should go the way of other sites and groups on fb and block the sale of animals on its site.

A lot of legitimate livestock sales go through classified ads including ebrandon .  
I bought our Jack Russell through ebrandon from a farm for sensible money and the pups and parents were very well taken care of and ours is a very much loved family pet.  
Also that wouldn’t stop the dumping of unwanted animals , this happens out in the country more then you realize. People drive out , see a farmyard and dump their unwanted pets for farm families to take care of. We have a cat and a German Shepard cross that were both dumped outside our farm yard. We got them checked,neutered and vaccinated and they are well loved and taken care of now too.

Dogs cost a lot to be taken care of well. Vet bills, city licensing, etc. I think that if you don’t want to save for a pet ( a very long responsibility), there is a good chance you will not save for spading, shots, training ( if need be) etc. There is nothing that will love you more then your dog and they need to be treated very well.  
There are too many people that take this for granted. That’s why we have a animal pound in the first place

It’s absurd that these “breeders” are charging such an outrageous amount. Here’s one issue why people do it: sometimes the rescues and BHS won’t adopt to you. I’ve heard so many couples, families (good, good people) that have been turned away. One reason was because “their fence wasn’t 6 feet tall (BHS).” Are you serious?! So people look elsewhere.

I agree that the prices have gotten out of hand but as long as people pay then the prices will not drop.  
 
As for adoption- not everyone can adopt. We were turned down so ended up buying our 2 dogs. First one cost $50. Mixed breed of 3 breeds were liked. Best dog ever. 2nd dog is purebred not papered small bred for $800. She can with half of her vet visits done already. Great dog as well.  
 
I was very turned off adoption after our situation. We used to support various organizations only to be denied without so much as a call to our references or a home visit.  
 
If people want to pay then it’s up to them. There obviously is a market and maybe if the rescues wouldn’t turn people away so quickly people wouldn’t have to buy a dog.

If they want people to “adopt, don’t shop” then they really have to be more lenient with things. Otherwise they are just as much part of the problem.

Everyone thought covid would be a great time to get a pup. And yes, the asking price is ridiculous! However, try contacting any of the breeders who’s ads are more than a couple weeks old and they’ll all be spoken for. People are buying up puppies so fast that the price has almost doubled since COVID. And people are willing to pay $2500 for a small breed puppy so they charge that. It’s called supply and demand. If you refuse to pay more than $500 for a small breed puppy, you won’t be getting a puppy any time soon, as the next person is more than willing to pay 3 times that... if they can respond to the ad fast enough before the pups are spoken for.

Those three breeds you mentioned will be in the 2-5000 range no matter the age. They are a very expensive breed and can come with lots of different health issues because of their short noses. If you find one any cheaper they are most likely back yard breeders and don’t care about the genetics and you will end up paying 1000s in vet bills so better to pay more up front and it will save you money later on. If money is an issue unfortunately those breeds just aren’t for you.

I agree that the puppy prices are unreal and especially for as they call Heinz 57. I am retired and would love a small dog to keep me company. I have watched the ads and see the prices going up and up. Do they even care where those sweet little animals go? I have looked at the rescue sites but I am told they want you to have a fenced in yard....well mine is not. I have given up getting a little furry friend but I do still look.

This cannot be stressed enough!! If you care enough for an animal's well being, then you would adopt from a rescue.

I watched for 6+ months on every humane society and rescue site in Manitoba/ Sk (driving distance) for a smaller breed dog after ours passed away from old age. Wanted something younger (under 3 years). The vast majority of dogs are (or going to be) VERY LARGE!

The way this post reads it if you get your dog anywhere other than a rescue then you don't really care about the well being of dogs. Each person has their own expectations about the animals they bring into their lives. For myself, I love researching the different breeds and picking a breed of dog for its characteristics. The dog may be a single breed or a mixed breed. I want to start my relationship with my pets from puppyhood. My past preferences was for a small to medium dog. If my life allows for me to have another relationship with a different breed/mix then I will look at a larger breed of dog. Have I ever considered a grown dog from the SPCA, Yes I have but have never felt the draw to a grown dog. I want to start with a puppy.  
That, in no way, means I do not care about all the dogs/animals that end up in a rescue situation and I take great offense at anyone who may imply otherwise.

I agree with you100%, each situation is different and it is unfair to criticize loving and responsible pet owners or try to make them feel guilty for not taking on a rescued animal.  
I think that the problem is that quite a lot of people don’t understand or take seriously the commitment required to take care of any animal or pet and that creates the issues at the rescues.
