Thinking of getting a puppy

We are thinking of getting a puppy,this dog will be a small mixed breed. We have one child (7) and I stay at home. This pup is available in 2 mths.
What key things do I need to know before we go ahead with this.
Paper training?
Male vs Female?
Whatever advice from puppy/dog owner would be appreciated.
