Need advice on finding a new home for my cat

I have a huge problem. Seven years ago my husband and I rescued a sweet little kitten from an animal shelter. We've loved the little guy to pieces since - even though he's now huge (a large tabby). Cue to three years ago when I got pregnant with our second child and developed allergies to him. That's no problem - I can handle being stuffed up all the time and breaking out in rashes from his fur. Now the problem is both my daughter and son are allergic as well. In my daughter's case her ears, nose and tear ducts are blocked from the allergy so it's pretty uncomfortable. My son is just constantly stuffed up. They are too little for drugs (and I'm not comfortable having them on long-term drugs anyway), so the choice is the kids vs. the cat.
How would you go about finding a new home for an animal? I'm reluctant to put an ad anywhere because I want to make sure that he is loved and in a good home and gets the forever home I thought that we were giving him. I've asked my friends, but most already have pets. He is such a sweet, loving animal that he deserves to be somewhere where he'll be adored. For this reason I can't see returning him to the shelter we rescued him from, even though they will take him back. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to find a good home?
