Backwards dew claws

Just curious. My dog McDuff has a dew claw on one of his back legs that is turned backwards and black. The vet has told us it's nothing to worry about. A lady at the Purple Poodle told me it was because McDuff is part Chow. Does this correspond with anyone else's experience with backwards dew claws?
