Neighbourhood dog, what to do?

Ok so last year I moved into a new neighbour, and my nextdoor neighbour has a big dog, who kind of roams the neighbourhood. The dog is never tied up, and is free to roam in everyones yards. At first, I thought, what the heck? Why is he allowed to do this? But after awhile and talking to the other neighbours, they all said that they enjoy the dog comming to visit etc.. So I thought well whatever.
Well come winter I would notice the dog would come over to my yard and do his business. And this made me quite angry. I don't have any animals, so why on earth should I have to go out in my yard and scoop dog poop. but when the snow melted, the dog would do it somewhere else.
Now come summer, EVERYDAY this sog is comming in my yard, and pooping everywhere. It floors me. I have 2 little boys who love to play in the grass, and yet my yard is covered in dog poop.
WHAT DO I DO? If I complain I will be the disgrace of the neighbourhood, because everyone loves this friendly dog. If I call the pound, obviously they will know it is me, since I am the newest, and I don't want to the dog to be taken away, just out of my yard, and for his poop to be cleaned up. is that to much to ask for? I really hate cleaning up poop when I don't own a dog. Plus, even though this dog seems friendly enough, it still makes me nervous when i take my boys out to play and this dog comes over and nudges and sniffs my kids. How do I know he won't bite?
Please help?
