I found to stop some of the litter from being outside the litter box I put it inside one of those large banana boxes lay newspaper in the bottom it helps .

your cat is more like a small horse or elephant ? And every time he exits the litter box feels it is necessary to jump out like it is nationals for long jump and run like he is running for his life which in turn spreads litter half way across the house. He would completely clear any tray surrounding the litter box when he jumps out! There is even a top cover to the giant litter box. Got any answers for me lol ?  
In all seriousness related to litter box problems I think he does this b/c he hates the litter on his feet and I have tried different style of litter and he hates it even more.

a set of cheap floor mats for the car. Placed them all around the box. Seems to have helped but its still perfect. I do notice a lot of litter trapped on the floor mats. Also I noticed at Dollarama on 18th they have the real mats to prevent litter from tracking. I just bought one of those too, to see if it works better. They have these mats at pet stores, etc but for a lot more money.

just train your cat to go to the toilet (your toilet) then i'll need is press to flush. Never have to buy cat litter and the clean up also save space on your floor. Cat litter isn't an art decoration

Easier said than done to train a cat to use the toilet. We've tried it and almost broke the cat!lol Seriously, the cat we tried to train was under so much stress when we did this for the three week period that he started just going everywhere and ended up with diarrhea so we quit. He would use the toilet ring when there was litter in it but once we started cutting the hole out in the middle he was stressed to the max. He was only about a year old, but maybe if you train a kitten right from the start you might have better luck. Another factor to consider is that you pretty much have to give up a toilet in the house for this training for at least a month or more while training. IMO it wasn't worth the headache and a covered litter box is what we still use for our cats.

trained my 16 year old cat with a kit i bought in a pet store in winnipeg. 3 different size rings. If i get another cat i sure will try again training when done it is worth it

Is a giant Rubbermaid container. One on end I cut a square a bit down from the too to make getting in and out easier. But this way it can be deep and the cat can dig to it's hearts content, and none ever gets tossed out. Since switching to this we have all been happier they have to jump out and there is hardly any litter that lands on the floor now. I can keep the litter a little deeper now too which makes scooping easier and the bottom of the box doesn't get wet.
