I am on the look out for an enzyme cleaner or neutralizer for pet urine. I know I can buy it at highly over inflated costs in small bottles at pet stores. I am looking for alternatives as it is about 500 ft of floor I have to deal with.  
 
Here is the situation - we tore out the sub floor of our basement to find gravel (don't get me started on things people do cheaply and poorly to sell a house - my head will explode) So we pulled that up and of course the cats went nuts - giant litter box - hooray!!! On top of that, the smell from this gravel is just awful, my guess is there is mold in it too. Our plan is to pour a proper concrete slab in the spring, but I need to get rid of the smell and seal it until we can afford the proper fix.  
 
I have already shoveled out pails and pails of this gravel around the area the cats chose, but I want to spray the entire floor with something to hopefully neutralize as much of the cat smell as I can before we seal it. The idea is to poly it completely and cover, but I really should try to mask the urine the best I can first.  
 
Does anyone have ideas on what I can use? Sure, I could use bottle of Febreez, or dump baking soda all over too. I thought Zep might have a deodorizer, but can't seem to track that down either.  
 

Try vinegar! It works really good for pet urine, not as good as an actual enzyme cleaner but I'm sure it would help make a difference!

Can't believe I never thought of it - my cat recently had a bout with crystals and was peeing on our upstairs floors. And of course I use vinegar to clean that up...duhhh.  
 
I cannot physically CLEAN each and every rock and pebble, so something I can spray and soak the area with - then let it dry out might be the only way to go. Vinegar is cheap too...  
 
Could also use bleach, but we'd have to make sure we ventilated really well while it dries.

Bleach is ammonia based like the urine. It can make the smell worse. Vinegar is not ammonia based and is the way to go IMO

Bleach is not ammonia based, you shouldnt actually mix bleach and ammonia but i have used it to mask the small of cat urine (well ventilated tho) vinegar works too but you can try buying a jug of enzyme cleaner and put it in an old spray bottle, last one i bought cost $22 at the pet store at the Mohawk, unfortunately the smell of the cat urine and gravel may stay until you can fix it properly, im sure you are making that a priority but have you thought about a loan or something, id want that fixed asap

Tried this once before and absolutely made things worse. Ended up using a product called ZEP which can be bought at Home Depot - worked great!

Never use a chlorine bleac to treat any kind of urine! The chemical make up of bleach when combined with urine will create a very toxic gas. Cat urine is very strong combined with bleach is VERY hazardous to your health!! To treat this mix vinegar with water about half and half, apply with a pump up style pressure sprayer. Repeat if necessary. The acidic nature of vinegar should neutralize the ammonia of the urine

Zep is a brand name. They have hundreds of cleaners - do you know exactly which product??

I sell Eco friendly enzyme based solutions that work wonders on my cat accidents. One of my boys started marking when we brought in a piece of used furniture, likely harbouring previous pet odours. Norwex carpet stain buster fixed that no problem. Also have a sportzyme and odour eliminator option. PM me for more detail. Beneffect is another Eco friendly choice.... Not sure where you find it though.
