My fiance and I are looking to donate to charities and are specifically looking for ones in and around our local area. I have been looking online but I know I must be missing some. Does anyone have any good ideas for charities in this area, or events for good causes that might need a bit of extra financial help?

I am afraid the information regarding the United Way is incorrect for Brandon Area and District. 100% of the funds raised by the Brandon Area & District goes to the charitable part of United Way. Government funding and donations of resources from companies allow the United Way office to function. I applaud the OP for the inquiry on where to donate funding, giving to the community you live in is always noble.  
I have seen the impact United Way has had on our community, and I am a strong believer that the United Way plays an important role within the Community we live in. I recognize all of the great programs we have, such as Big Brothers/Sisters, Helping Hands, Immigrant services, Elspeth Reid Center and so many more, in our community and many of them are supported via the United Way. I believe that many of these organizations should be able to focus on the task and work they are trying to do, rather than just fundraising. The United Way can help free up resources, so these great organizations can focus on the work they have been set up to do.  
You can completely decide where your funds are directed within the United Way as well.

Definitely Strays that can’t pay if you are an animal lover. They would graciously accept any donation you have to offer! Amazing cause !

Not sure if this is the right name or not Westman dreams for Kids or Children’s Wish Foundation out of Winnipeg (that one is important to us). Ronald McDonald house not in Brandon but lots of westman families use it.

is always accepting/fundraising for donations with haunted forest being one of their biggest fundraisers as well as bowl for kids sake. Funds stay local and go to help children’s and teens. Great mentoring organization and they are always looking for volunteers as well.

I understand that this group has secured a location are in the process of opening a detox facility in conjunction with the Canadian Mental Health Association and with Prairie Mountain Health.  
 
Perhaps its time that this group along with CMHA and PMH host a community consultation event to share their plans. Particularly if they are expecting the community to contribute to their cause via their Go Fund Me page.

We have secured a possible location dependent on some research with codes etc. The plan is to involve all levels of gov’t, private business and personal donations.  
For now, our goal is to raise enough both member & public education, operating expenses, and research.  
We are thrilled to be working alongside & collaborating with many agencies, and gov’t. I am amazed at the level of commitment and passion our city has shown. We can be the leaders in treatment!  
Opening a detox is the first step, but fulfilling other goals to be successful and accessible for all along the way!

The Brandon Area Community Foundation can help you support many charities in our area including projects at the Keystone Centre, Women''s charities, other community centre and more.

As per our GoFundMe page we are working on the detox with CMHA, and with PMH on Harm Reduction.  
 
When we have plans to share that will be a priority with the public consultation. In the meantime, we are working on focus groups with the folks that are currently battling active addiction & in various stages of recovery so we can best determine what they feel they need. What a better way to determine what will or will not work. We want this facility to be holistic in every aspect, and those are all little steps. This will not be an overnight process as much as we would like it to you!  
 
The GoFundMe is a way to accomplish those small steps: research, education, development, public consultations and forums. We can be the leaders in cutting edge treatment in Brandon!

Can't keep up with the inconsistent messaging on social media by the Westman group for a detox facility or what they are trying to achieve for that matter.  
 
A support group that also wants to run a detox, do research/education, development, public consultations and forums, cutting edge treatment.

BRHC Foundation (Brandon Regional Health Centre), keeps their donations local and goes toward numerous programs. One example is Murray House for patients receiving cancer treatments.  
 
Ronald McDonald house in Winnipeg is great. Many families from Brandon and Westman area use these amazing facilities.  
 
Westman Dreams for Kids is a wonderful local charity.  
 
SMD (Society for Manitobans living with Disabilities) is one that’s near and dear to our hearts, as they continuously help one of our loved ones who has disabilities, cope.

The Keystone is a registered charity with the CRA - most people don't realize that - you can donate to any projects there and ask for a charitable receipt

A relatively new charity in Brandon is the Assiniboine Food Forest. This is a local initiative based in the east end of the city focussing on education, environmental sustainability, and local food security. More info can be found on the website at http://www.assiniboinefoodforest.ca

something new everyday! Never knew this fact but the Keystone is not what I would think of being a true charity, even though they need a butt load of money, every single year.  
 
Charity to me is helping people in need, the more the better.

I second the suggestion for bacf. They will have a great list of charities from their 100 Women who Care and there normal charitable giving in the city. They will be able to help you with ideas. http://bacf.ca/

There is also Christmas Cheer . They distribute1000= hampers every year and need help with buying merchandise . you can also volunteer time there . Donations to it can be made through The Brandon Sun .
