What would you call it if not compensating for something and keep trump out of it he does not need to be in this conversation

Ugly stick and 3 lures! Cracks me up. Yea i would like to join in on that competition also! Talk is cheap. Couldn’t have said it any better!

How did they fish in the "old" years without all this fancy equipment and technology...most I know, got along just fine and caught their limits or what they wanted to.  
 
My dad (bless him), went out in a 14' alum boat. A farmer style boat with 2 inches of grease, sludge, garbage, old lures thrown in the back.  
 
He used the same rod every time and the same rusty lure. If he caught a fish (while trolling, he hated sitting in one spot) and had even a quarter inch of a worm left, that was enough bait for him and he kept catching.  
 
He out fished us every time, For walleye at Lake of the Prairies. Didn't matter if we forced him into jigging - he still could out fish us... a very patient man.  
 
According to him, we had too much fancy shit, watched too many fishing shows, and we "jerked back" too hard, when we thought we had a fish on. Well, I never, I was too lazy, it is either going to take it or not. They have soft mouths, not much sense in giving them a jerk - can't get someone to believe me.  
 
Even when he went to Elbow Lake in Northern Manitoba with his crappy old favorite rod and lure, he still came back with the pictures of all the fish he was holding.  
 
Anyway - I fished with my dad and and his crappy shit from the age of 12 to 50 - Hope you are catching "your way" in heaven dad!  
 
It is suppose to be fun - nothing like a day on the water catching fish and even releasing them. For that, you can get what you need, right here in Brandon.  
 
I looked at a $1200 bait reel at Jo Brook - I said how many of these do you sell? He said a couple of year to a group of Brandon "big wigs" who go on a fishing trip and just want to look good, they don't care what they catch, long as they have the best.

If I really cared what some so called fishermen thought I would do it but all your equipment couldn't fit on the floats of the plane I take to go where I fish. It lands in the middle of the lake, I untie my canoe and gear from the float and he picks me up the same way two week later. I'm not sure you guys would survive out there without all that equipment you need to fish with. Brenda I would have loved to go fishing with your dad he sounds a lot like my old man. Maybe they met each other up yonder and are fishing the same heavenly waters

Personally don’t buy expensive fishing gear, I don’t by 14.00 rods either, but with hooks and pretty run of the mill and they work just fine, Jo Brook, Canadian tire, and HH do just fine for me.  
 
Brenda, your dad, reminds me of my grandpa, he taught me to fish with just a willow branch with some string on it and took me to the trout pond, than gave me my first rod and reel combo once I became co-ordinated enough to operate the reel and casting motion at the same time. Ahh fond memories.

I am not sure why some people are so concerned about how much money people spend on their hobbie.  
This discussion just started as it would be nice to have better fishing store but it has turned into a discussion on I am a better fisher than you.

most anglers can buy all they need here in Brandon.  
 
It turned into "how much money" and "I am better than you" for the one's that believe you need the most expensive and best equipment to catch a fish. Which, you cannot get in Brandon. Also, which one does not need.  
 
To prove you don't need that pricey equipment one must tell a little story. That fish can be caught using cheaper equipment just as well as pricier - again, what you can get here in Brandon.  
 
If you read e-brandon all the time - you would know, this is how all threads go.

Done almost that very thing. Tied a line to the back of my canoe and caught a fish paddling to my camp site

My ex grew up not too far from Omand's Creek in Winnipeg. He lived in a rough-ish neigbourhood [West End], and fishing kept him out of trouble. He'd walk or bike down pretty much every day and fish at the junction of Omand's & the Assinniboine (his favorite spot). All he had was a single rod/reel (which I'm sure was just from Canadian Tire or something) and some cheap tackle, because that's all he could afford.  
 
He caught fish pretty much every day. Let most of the them go. Ate some of the them. He even pulled a master angler's walleye out of that creek when he was a teen.  
 
To me, that's how I envision fishing.

They just caught what ever they got and how many. Today people target a specific species and can usually get the bigger ones. Also there is also more boating and fishing pressure which makes it harder. In some places fish stop biting for a few days after a fishing tournament or after a heavy boating day. Today a top of the line fishing boat can well be over $110 thousand dollars all rigged out. The average price of a new rig is around $40 grand plus. Gas tanks in boats are the same size as whats in trucks. You can easy go through $100 in fuel in the truck and boat per day. Up north a jig with a twister tail and a minnow can easily get you couple hundred walleye a day, that's not the case down here.  
 
My boat is rigged to fish every species, i can fish in 3 feet of water to 100+ feet of water. Example in Clear lake pike are in 10+ feet of water and trout are in 40-100+ feet of water.

The fuel is pretty crazy. Especially for the price per litre these days. My boat takes double of what my 3/4 ton does. 204 litres ( 45 ) gallon tank on my 20’ lund. And it dont take long for the 200 to burn that.

Amazon. If you’ve ever had conversations with other local business owners you’ll hear a few anecdotes like “I tried to stock item X but all I kept hearing was how how they could order it online for $40 less...so we just quit selling it” or “I just can’t compete with website X’s prices because I have to pay rent, hydro, phone, wages every month...and if I’m not moving steady volume it doesn’t pay (like 6 months of winter for summer sports). So they slowly get eroded until they’re just gone or they just shrug and say “I’ll order it for you”

No interest in proving anything to you, I don't want to be mean but It's just not worth my time. I have a fishing trip planed for august out in Northern Ontario with some natural resources buddy's and that is my priority I will leave the fish in these waters to you guys. Have fun

I have to be at work as it is a weekday. Also any Knowledgeable fishermen knows that the sucker run is over haha. I for one am not a sucker since I feel you are being sarcastic. And if you wanted to know suckers spawn in the springtime.

I could catch more fish then all of you guys with a stick and a shoe string /sarcasm

I suspect the reason is because of how high retail rent is in Brandon, you''ve got to sell a lot of fishing tackle at low markup to pay the rent... not to mention cover costs of wages... Then you understand why the only people who have the money to open a Tackle Shop DONT... The risk vs reward simply isn''t there. Nobody wants to compete with Canadian Tire and since a lot of people already buy from Amazon or Cabela''s now you''re competing with them too... I wish we had a cool mom & pop Tackle Shop too, but I understand why we don''t.  
 
Jo-Brooks Outdoors and Home Hardware are both locally owned shops and have a good selection with knowledgeable staff!  
 
Edit: I also forgot to mention although its not exactly what OP was asking for but, if you're on Facebook or Instagram there are quite a few local fishermen & women who sell custom made tackle on both Facebook / Instagram i see posts in my feed almost daily... So if you're into fishing and on social media you can find some really cool stuff made locally with relatively low difficulty.. Anything from custom jigs to rip'n raps.  
 
Lookup "Ice Fishing Manitoba" on Facebook and you'll find a fishing group with 13,000+ active users. If you're not already a member and they post content DAILY.

Have you every managed to catch a trout in Clear Lake and if so how deep ?

yes, real fisherman know the sucker run is in the spring, we also know catching suckers in the spring run is generally done with a net. Mind you, that might be what you meant when you said you can''t catch fish with an ugly stick..  
A quick look at the master angler program, it's an award program for people that use a fishing rod, shows over 30 master angler suckers have been report in the first 2 weeks of July.

Gosh ...guy just south of town called Bills Prop Shop all you need...past cemetary going south about 1/4 mile on highwY 10.. Known them for years and a very helpful guy.
