Anyone else noticing issues tonight? Just had a couple flickers in our part of town... imagine the cold is pretty stressful on the power grid!

Just out of Brandon it went off for a few seconds then back on

North hill as well.

Just west of 18th street.

we were wondering if it was just our place, guess not. NOW THIS would be a horrible night for the power to go out.

Minnedosa & Neepawa areas are without power.

Looks like some in Minnedosa and Neepawa are both without power

When there was a large power outage in rural areas a while ago it sort of became obvious how unprepared most people are, including myself.  
I hope some of the folks that are experiencing these outages have some way to heat their homes and stay warm.  
The idea of burning wood has sort of been frowned upon, and in a way it may have been a step backwards, especially in a climate like ours, just imagine the chaos if the grid went down in a large way with conditions like we are having tonight or in the next 36 hours.  
Hoping the power comes on shortly for all those who are out right now.

Don... I don't think most people in Brandon or most urban areas are able to burn wood in their houses but I could be wrong.

Not all of us, but most, have the belief that the power grid will always be up and running for most of the time, with interruptions only being short.  
We have built houses that a wood stove is not even thought of, the insurance industry has also pushed the idea that it is unsafe,and the green sector has pushed that it is not healthy for the environment.  
Sometimes we forget or ignore the reality of where we live, which someday may cost us in a big way.

Isn't that what a generator is for? Some backup?

I have a wood burning fireplace in my new house. There are codes to follow like everything but there is no rule against a wood burning fireplace at all. Our fireplace burns clean epa certified. On the green side all of the wood we burn is trees that were going to be cut down anyhow. Once a tree is cut down the carbon will be released one way or another. Most green thing to do with a dead tree is to burn it for heat.
