But_coffee_first said "“Just because you live in the area doesnt mean you are entitled to know what happened”?? Actually, BECAUSE I live in the area, I’m entitled to know what happens. I’m a tax paying citizen, and my children attend the school which just happens to be directly across from the residence in question. Our children deserve to be safe, and if there are guns directly across the street from their elementary school, we, as parents, have a RIGHT to information. There should be no expectation of privacy in this situation. "
If you, or your children, or anyone in your neighborhood are in danger, you have a right to enough information to do the maximum to ensure your safety. But if it is an ongoing active investigation, releasing information could result a suspect getting away, or unwarranted danger to the police, or others, yourself and your children i:ncluded. And even after as suspect is arrested, releasing information will in many cases hamper the prosecution. Where possible, the police will be as open and informative as possible, the better to have good community relations. But this will not always be possible, or even legal in some instances.
