Just wondering if anyone knows what the cost is for picking up the garbage and recycling weekly? Does every household have a set rate or is it just a percentage of taxes to the sanitation dept?  
I had a friend from Lethbridge recently ask what our costs are. Their council was to vote today to add curbside recycling pick up. Currently for just garbage pick up there is $20.70/month. They are proposing to have garbage picked up every other week and have a curbside recycling bin to be picked up on the opposite weeks. The cost would be moved to $26.20/month. Even though they would still be only have one thing picked up every week. A lot of people are concerned that obviously thats not enough pickups of the actual garbage, as every two weeks could create a mess.  
So my friend was asking what we paid to have this service and have both done every week, here in Manitoba. Does anyone know as I honestly have no clue?

Actually many cities in Toronto have garbage pick ups every 2 weeks and recycling and green bin pick ups every week. IF you have extra garbage on the week of the garbage pick ups, you would need to buy garbage tags or else only a maximum garbage is taken.  
 
IMO.. Manitoba needs to get this way. Personally I think the green bin program in Brandon is a joke. Most people in my neighbourhood use it just for glass clippings and leaves.

I know people who just take their extra garbage and drop it off in front of the town office or at one of the schools, did nothing except inconvenience people. In the same vein as getting rid of plastic bags, nothing more than an inconvenience to the people.  
 
Then they wonder why people aren't happy about tax and water bill increases.

Minnedosa has a flat fee of $100 added on your tax bill for garbage collection. It is weekly, as is recycling which is on a different day.  
I would not be happy with garbage pickup every 2 weeks in the summer time, think the smell would get pretty high.

With a family of 4 we put ours out every 2 weeks and it hasn't really been a problem, but in the summer you need to wash the bin out after each pick up or you will get bugs

I think it is terrible as in Ontario you could only put of a max of 1 bag and if the garbage men seen a recyclable in your garbage they would leave it on the curb and the week after you would be behind in your garbage this was a few years back when I lived there, I'm not against recycling I recycle all the time , it was a real pain it was a full time job for a large family it would be cans in one cardboard in another and scraps in another then household garbage

I don't know for sure how they charge for it on taxes, but...I put out my recycling far more often than the garbage. Family of 3 and each only goes out once every two weeks. Most of what is "garbage" is actually recyclable.

On a side note, their council voted down the notion of having curbside recycling and would rather stick to weekly garbage pick up only. The people spoke and didn't want to pay $5.50 more/mth to have curbside recycling every other week, and garbage pick up on opposite weeks. As with opinion above I find the recycling program more beneficial as a lot of "garbage" is actually recycling. I am glad we have recycling containers for curbside pickup. Just my opinion. So thank-you again Brandon for the services that we have.
