Would like to hear what product, or home remedy that actually works. Have used the RC brand shampoo treatment, but apparently it only kills the adult and not nits, so like how many bottles must one go through (and they are expensive ) to get complete results. Would appreciate some of your input on this awful situation and what actually works. Thanks

If your hair is long enough use a high heat straightening iron, and do small sections at a time.Comb with nit comb Fries both adults & eggs. Do this every 3 days to catch the new batches. Do with whatever treatment you use, and you'll shake them faster. Most of the homemade treatments are bunk or take f o r e v e r to take care of the problem.

There are some good ideas on the internet if you google. Using Tea Tree oil shampoo on a regular basis works. The main thing is to continue going thru the hair is small sections and taking out all the nits. Also washing and drying on high heat all clothing and bedding items. A good vacuum in any areas that have come into contact.. such as couches etc.  
The over the counter doesn't work as the lice have become resilient to the chemicals.

I know a few years back there where articles in the New England Journal of medicine about using products that contained ivermectin. I think I heard of one product that was a cream that did work quite well, I'm not sure if they developed an oral way of taking ivermectin but like I said ask your doctor about any treatments that contain ivermectin

With a NIT comb!! The over the counter shampoos IMO don't work that well. We really struggled with this last year and I found a product at Shoppers that worked really well. It's called Nyda. Is put on dry hair and left in over night. You have to wash hair a couple times in the morning to get it out! I was really naive about this as I never had it as a kid myself nor had my own kids had it prior to last year. I thought the shampoos would work but they didn't do like they said they would. I got on line and studied the life cycle of the head louse. We now practice preventive in our house which for us is tea tree oil added to the shampoo and weekly head checks. We have not had a case at all this year. It's very time consuming with the combing but that is the best remedy to rid the lice. If you miss just one NIT you have a full blown case again. Good luck!!

When my son had it, Itried the nix shampoo but found it did nothing. I then tried just lathering the hair with hair conditioner and used a very fine toothed metal comb (not the cheap plastic ones) and thoroughly combed the hair insmall sections. Worked great for us. Within a week i wasnt combing anything out. Evena week later there was nothing

is the way to beat them. Make sure you do all your laundry, bedding, etc., use the shampoo and comb out with the comb, wash and then go through again with the nit comb, and go in different directions. Some nits you will find you must pull off like beads off a string. Patience and no short cuts is the way. Good luck!

I don't believe any of the shampoos kill nits. You must remove them with a good quality nit comb, each and every day, or better yet twice a day. In the meantime vacuum daily, wash sheets, hats, etc. Be careful of where their head sits like the couch or your car if it's a bad case.  
 
I have heard to put baby oil and a cap on over night to help suffocate them. You will probably have to use the shampoo a couple times, few days or a week apart. Talk to the Dr or pharmacist what brands work best, none are perfect.  
 
For prevention after tea tree oil in shampoo, hair gel, girls hair up in a pony tail etc can help.

I used a product from Shoppers called Resultz and found it was very effective. It's not as harsh as other treatments, although does leave the hair a bit greasy. It doesn't kill the eggs though so you have to be diligent with combing every night. If you read the product info in the package it talks about the life cycle of lice. It is important that you do the treatment every 7-10 days, which will catch the lice after they have hatched, but before they can actually lay new eggs. Even though it's tempting to do the treatment more often because you just want to get rid of them, waiting 7-10 days between is the best way to really get rid of them. A third treatment another 7-10 days after the second can catch any stragglers.  
 
Also, be sure to only treat those in your house who actually have confirmed lice. It's natural to want to treat everyone in your house but using treatments can make them less effective over time so you don't want to treat anyone who doesn't really need it.  
 
Good luck! It's an exhausting process but it does get better eventually!  
 
P.S. We had no luck with tea tree oil shampoos. They may work for some people, but we found it was a waste of time and money. For the most part, lice are going to stay near the head, so regular washing of bedding, etc is important, but don't kill yourself cleaning every nook and cranny in your house. I do recommend putting hair up and encouraging kids not to share hats and things.

for the shampoos to work you have to follow the directions exactly which takes into account the life cycle of the lice, like the poster above explained  
 
lice nits hatch after 7 days yet cannot make babys for a couple more days so if you kill all the adults off on day one then comb in between to make sure you are not spreading the hatchlings, then wash again on day 7-10 none of those hatchlings should be able to lay eggs. thus stopping the cycle  
 
i think lots of times the adult lice are spread back and forth while people are battling them, which makes it really hard to stop then, so also try to limit your childs exposure to other kids so that the friends arent passing them back and forth too  
 
some lice have become resistant to a few of the shampoos, ask the pharmacist which ones are working the best this year

As a concerned parent, what school are these lice coming from? Haven't gotten any notice. Want to make sure my kid is safe

I have effective done this process:  
 
buy a cheapest jar of miracle whip Or store brand! use lots cover whole head. Put a shower cap on the effected person. leave on for 1 hour.  
 
If this is on a child 10 and under I keep in my site for the time duration. It will become itchy I do not allow the child's finger to slip up under the shower cap.  
 
after 1 hour rinse with water. Then wait 5 minutes and re rinse with Vinegar!  
 
Use a nit comb - comb out the hair.  
I rewash the hair and nit comb 3 times a day for 2 or 3 days. then I watch the hair for the next week at least twice a day.  
 
I would repeat the whole process if anything is found after 5 days.  
 
I also keep a clean shirt and underwear for each child in a tightly tied bag in a closet well away from the sleeping area of the house. because if the bugs are found the children are not allowed in their rooms.  
Bedroom is shut up for 48hours - to allow the bugs to die. then the whole room is deep cleaned.  
 
But remember you are hugging and in close contact while reading etc to your child. You could get them too. So if your start scratching don't be shy to give yourself a vinegar rinse and get someone to check you.

will come no matter what home remedy you try....although putting product in the hair (hairspray or mousse) wont allow them to latch on to the hair.....and another pointer....use a metal lice comb the plastic ones are useless....that and alot of patience searching....need help??

Lots of patience! One of my kids got it a couple years ago and has insanely thick hair. It was torture! But we did a lice shampoo treatment, bought a metal lice comb (the plastic ones don't work) and twice a day I'd go through the hair pulling all the eggs and lice out. I did that for just over a week and they were gone!

I 2nd "resultz"... though you have to make sure to treat a 2nd time and do a full clean of house and bedding. There's also a metal electric comb that you used to be able to get from shoppers. It's battery operated and it zaps all the live bugs. Using a combination of resultz and the electric comb was how we finally got rid of them for good!

We used vinegar and a special shampoo the combination of them both it was gone in a few days.

Did the vinegar and shampoo kill the nits as well? They are the worst to get rid off: they seem to be immune and indistructable

There isn't anything that kills the nits. They need to be pulled off and snapped. If you would like help with this process message me.
