It does seem like a bit of a mismanagement of funds etc. We dont have any kids and pay school division taxes. What about all the people paying taxes to the school division that have no one in their family even going there?

I don''t use the sportsplex , I''m not interested in any flower gardens, dog parks, I bet I haven''t drove down your street, my house isn''t in the flood zone, and I don''t need the highways that go north of Brandon.  
I want a refund on my taxes too!

thats what im saying.....the original complaint or people arguing here seems pointless. everyone could say something doesnt suit them or they dont use etc etc etc that their taxes are going to....just seems like a mute point. is what it is and thats that.

I agree with tax $ wasted.

I agree it is a complete waste of money. The taxes are too high compared to other provinces.

What are you basing this on?  
 
Manitoba is right around the median in Canada for cost per student. And Brandon is among the cheaper divisions in Manitoba.

The fact there is a valid reason for all to gather and listen to the new boss may be valid. Yet why the previous years?  
 
Wellness days? A sick day for every 9 working sounds out of whack with normal working reality.  
 
As a group teachers get professional development days. A day away from teaching. Why not start one of those days with a big group hug/guest speaker and after two hours get back to learning.  
 
This is a school board / management issue.  
 
Best wishes to the new guy. One suggestion though. To lighten your teachers tax load offer to your full time teachers a 12 month pay package. Take the ten months once a month and divide it into 12. Other divisions do it. Again great thread. Good points from all.

We pay more then double school taxes and property taxes compared to Ontario. If it is less expensive per student where is all the money going?

Consider that Ontario spent $25 billion on education in public schools in 2012-13, the most recent year of available data. This is $8.3 billion more than was spent in 2003/04—an increase of 50 per cent.  
 
This substantial increase occurred despite a 4.6 per cent decline in student enrolment in Ontario’s public schools over that same period. As a result, per-student spending has increased by 57.3 per cent during this timeframe. In other words, more money was spent on fewer students.  
 
Considering Manitoba over the same period recorded a -3.8 percent increase per student and that Brandon is in the bottom end of cost per student funding, I find your post questionable.  
 
Cost per student ratio, not total cost.  
 
It should also be noted that Brandon has had an increasing enrolment rate, extra students cost extra money.

We do get paid every month for 12 months.

we are paid over 12 months in BSD

Anyone think maybe the Breakfast was donated by someone/business that appreciates everything our BSD teachers do for our children! Stop complaining you people have no idea about anything, get your facts straight before you sit down and complain on ebrandon!

Anyone see the value in reviewing policies, setting goals and everyone being on the same page at the beginning of the year? Imagine if all of the staff are just doing their own thing without any direction or even not knowing who their answering too, chaos that would prevail. To take a couple of hours to ensure that everyone understands the direction this year is taking seems like a good investment in my opinion. I do not have any vested interest other than to see Brandon students getting the best education possible. I don't have children in the school system but an investment in our education is an investment in our community. Yes they could have had this meeting and not i:ncluded breakfast but an investment in the staff is an investment in the students and community. Kudos for making it a cost-effective very small bonus. Many businesses or corporations or Boards have big expensive dinners. Whether it is in costs of services or products, we all pay  
directly for those big dinners as well. Being a taxpayer does not give me the right to begrudge this little incentive to start the year off right. I would like to thank all of the staff who work diligently and who are dedicated and will face many challenges in the year ahead. Enjoy your breakfast! There is no doubt in my mind you deserve it!
