Call the police. Let them take care of it. This also shows there is a problem area where users are doing drugs. The police might show more of a presence in that area if it is a known area.

Once you've let the police know about the problem in your area-you can just call the office line during the day to talk it over with one of them. Then, I suggest getting a "sharps" container-I think most pharmacies sell them. I also believe that the pharmacies will take and dispose of them too. It is worth a try and it is very good of you to care about your neighbourhood.

At any pharmacy or even at the entrance of the hospital there is a drop off for sharps.

Pretty pathetic for our small city to have such trashy mess going on behind one of the main thoroughfares.

pick them up to take to police, you might have some tough explaining to do if you got stopped on the way. even at the police station. it will look odd walking in the station with drug para and needles.

If you have to pick up/dispose. Carefully put them in used pop bottle and deliver to hospital or where ever.

i would NOT cover them as they could then really inadvertently stick someone, at least if you can see them you have a chance of avoiding a stick  
 
what i would do is carefully pick them up, preferably with something that you have good control of or at the very least gloved hands, put them in a sharps container or pop bottle and take them in to one of the places suggested, you could then call police and make a complaint, if you are not comfortable taking the risk to clean them up call the public health nurse as well as the police and see what they suggest

What happened to common sense? Having personally dealt with this before, I grabbed a pair of disposable gloves (first aid kit) and placed them in a pop bottle. Then took them to where the nearest sharps needle disposable box was and disposed of them. I'm unsure as to why you would waste the time of the police to come and do exactly what you could do yourself?

Why waste the time of the police? Seriously? Perhaps to inform them of the possibility of illegal activity near the OP's work? Perhaps to get an increase in police patrols in this area to reduce the afore mentioned illegal activity?  
 
Seems pretty obvious.

Maybe you could contact the 7th Street Access place and talk to one of the public health nurses there on the proper protocol for situations like this. Maybe they have a sharps dispoable container or know of someone who could help in those situations.  
 
I honestly can't say what I would do if I was in that situation, but I can say, maybe covering them up isn't the safest thing. Someone else may miss seeing them and get a prick.  
 
Accidents can happen when dealing with that kind of stuff but yeah, I would definetly call the public health clinics and seek advice.

Please do NOT touch them - let the Police come and gather them - they can maybe do some testing with these - and figure out what the heck is being injected, and perhaps do some DNA research with these - do NOT touch them - and do it ASAP! If you need, call Crime Stoppers . . .

They can be dropped off at 7th St. Health Access Centre. I believe Public Health and Mental Health Services in the Town Centre also collects them. If you have a laundry soap jug, they can be placed in there for safe transport.

Once they're cleaned up, I'd also consider installing a motion light on the property if I were you...would hopefully cut down on these type of activities.

like a dick, but the police will NEVER do DNA testing on used needles that are not connected with a major crime! This isn't like you see on TV where they run dna testing on a piece of hair you found on a toilet seat of the guy you're in love with. DNA/fingerprint testing is a very costly process and that is if Brandon even has that there. Sometimes this option needs to be shipped to a major center (Winnipeg) to actually be processed.  
While I agree the police should be notified of your findings by calling the NON-emergency line, but in the meantime you can pick up the needles with a pair of nitrile gloves on and if you are really concerned put 2 on and a pair of work gloves. As long as you have a good barrier between your skin and the needles you will be fine. Y'all are talking like we did as kids back in the 80's like you're going to contract aids from touching the toilet seat or if someone with aids breathes on you as they walk by.  
Yes it's disgusting, yes they should be safer with their sharps, but if these are drug users they tend to not care about safety! They could be for insulin and they could have just fallen out of the purse or vehicle of the diabetic. Just please do NOT cover them up!!!! That is only leading to a city worker or good Samaritan picking up the cover thinking that is has just blown there and possibly stabbing themselves with the needle. Pick them up by the non-needle end, put in a pop bottle and take to the places that others have mentioned. It sucks you have to do it, but it's not a huge deal.

It's actually quite alarming to know how many people have admitted they would leave the dirty laying there and no nothing, rather call upon an emergency service to come and remove them! The fear of what many people know very little about seems to be compounded by lack of basic common sense.

Leaving needles out for anyone to potentially stick themselves is irresponsible. Carefully pick them up and contain them until you can dispose of them at one of the many sharps disposal containers around town (labs, pharmacies ect.) maybe inform police that this is what you found but I wouldn't rely on them to get rid of the paraphernalia.

Or she can come over and put them in a bottle for that person. The last thing I want to be doing is handling someone's dirty needles. Accidents do happen and what if someone missed the pop bottle opening and ended up pricking themselves with the needle? Then what happens? You don't know what or if there is a disease on that needle. I am assuming this is a back alley. Now if it was a kids playground and there is a high chance of someone getting injured I would probably move it to a safer place but for me I would still call the non emergency line to have it disposed of. Sorry I don't do bio-hazard material.

I'm wondering if a pharmacy will provide you with a sharps container...a container with a narrow opening sounds risky.

its common that the police need to be reminded that they are there to protect the citizens who pay them - instead of sitting at Tim''s getting your donut - why not stop by the OPs place, and pick up some litter??? Clearly it is a Crime - since when do the Police not deal with Crime??? That my friend, would be "common sense" - or someone just doesn''t want to do their job . . . just saying. Being someone that has found used needles in and around the same around its called disposable rubber gloves and a bottle to a drop off centre. And having made calls before it is not the police that would handle the needles it's the firefighters ya know the thing called ambulances having sharps containers. And just to comment some of these comments are completely ridiculous. Why bother the police with something you can do yourself, the needles are a crime and Dna testing my god quit with the CSI. Police officers pay taxes to and we are lucky to have them I would like to know where you work so I can go to your office and tell you I'm paying your salary so you do what I want and remind you of it

The 7th Street Health Access Center has a needle drop box, I believe.....and yes, they should provide sharps disposal containers, usually for free. My dad was supplies with a free one upon request when he took blood thinner injections at home. Is finding needles a problem behind your work place? Maybe leave a sharps disposal container beside a smoke butt bin...maybe they'd use it instead of just leaving them...? Just an idea...good luck in your search finding safe needle disposal options!

Since when are police officers not allowed to stop for a coffee or take a lunch or break during their shift?  
 
They more than deserve it and by law an employer has to give you an half an hour lunch during your shift. Don't know about breaks though. But just because someone is payed by tax payer money doesn't mean they cant take breaks or lunches.

So it been three days since this discussion was started, so what did you do in the end with the needles?
