I have a friend who doesn't have a account on Ebrandon that wants some info about police scanners.He is looking to purchase one and knows they use fleetnet.It would be used in the rural areas and not Brandon Police Services.We read the earlier threads on them on Ebrandon but it seems the emails mentioned are not valid anymore.Basically he wants to know which models will pick up the police channels,prices on the units and who sells them.We read the threads where some people got their noses bent out of shape on the subject.Its just a hobby for him nothing else.So if you have some info about scanners,please let us know.Thanks.Have a great day.

Save your money. All police radio transmissions are digitally encrypted now. You will not hear a thing.

basically all police in Manitoba and else where in Canada is digitally encrypted. So he won't hear anything but digital static on the police channels.

No you definitely won’t get any police on a scanner these days. But you can still get rural fire departments, ems/ambulance, Cn Rail, CP Rail, maybe some airports and private companies on a scanner.  
 
As for who sells them, check out places like Extreme Electronics, Best Buy and any other places that sell electronics. I’ve seen them before in the store. I’m sure there’s also lots of websites you can buy scanners.

Almost if not all police frequencies are encrypted, so no luck on hearing them. As The Young Man said, fire/EMS are not encrypted so you'd be able to hear them. No place that I know of in Brandon sells scanners (I've looked), so you'd have to order one from online. Try Scanner Master. Look for a scanner with 800mhz (I believe) or over if you want you hear Fleetnet stuff.

has the cheap Uniden Bearcat 800mhz but it's not a trunk tracker which is what's required properly listen to Fleetnet. Otherwise you will have to go online. I have a Grecom brand scanner. They are also known better as Public Service Radios nowadays.

it's been that way for a good 5 years now. RCMP, BPS and WPS, ect. are all digital encrypted today and can't be listened to by any commercial scanner.
