How much do you tip your hairstylist? I have no idea how much I should be giving her in addition to the cost of the cut. She does a perfect job on my hair, 100% and I am very pleased. I usually give her a $5.00 tip on top of a $42.00 haircut. Is that sufficient or am I being cheap?

Good question...I was wondering this myself earlier this week as I got my hair cut and coloured. I usually only go once a year, sometimes once every 2 years so I’m not very up to date on how much to tip haha  
 
It was around $170 and I tipped $10, less than 10% so maybe that was too cheap? But I am of the belief that a tip is a tip and whatever the person wants to give is fine

When I go to the hairdresser I always tip at least 20%. I believe they work very hard for their money and if you are satisfied with the service show them. I go to the hairdresser every six weeks, so I make sure to tip. She is now part of my life.( she knows more about me then my friends)

I tip based on service and what I think they take home from their job. Gas jockeys I give probably 30%.. drive thru the same. My massage and hairstylists get paid way more so I usually give 5%.

Where are you people going that your hair cuts and colours cost so much!!  
 
I pay under $50 for my family of 3. When I get my hair dyed (basic dye) I pay under $80 for that appointment and that i:ncludes 2 other family members hair cuts as well.  
 
I usually round my amount up - so if my total is $42.23 then I give $45.  
 
Money is tight. I can’t imagine paying those prices AND leaving a big tip.

You tip a drive thru 30%? Like when you go through a Tim’s, McDonald’s etc drive thru, you tip the person at the window 30%? Interesting. I’ve never done this and I’ve never seen this done before, and I certainly didn’t know this was a thing. As for my hairdresser, cut and colour usually runs me about $150 and I tip about $10.

My cut and colour is actually highlights...so more time and effort than just a basic dye job  
 
I get it done so rarely, so for me it’s a treat...I couldn’t afford to do it all the time lol And I’m wayyyyy too low maintenance when it comes to beauty to even want to do it more often hahahaha

why a persons wage has anything to do with what you give them for a tip? if you give someone 10% for serving you a plate of food they didn't cook or plate, i would think 10% for making you look good would be a minimum. id be embarrassed to go to a hair salon and leave change for a tip money being tight or not. im not rich but alot of hairdressers arent paid a wage they pay chair rentals or are commission based only. Whens the last time you saw a independently wealthy hair stylist that started out without a helping hand?  
Plus the first two years out in the working world they are apprenticing and working on building a clientelle at just barely above minimum wage. ...a mgr in one salon in town makes twenty cents above minimum wage plus commission and has 10 yrs and a manager.. long story short they dont do it to get rich they do it because they are amazingly talented.

I take your comment is directed at me for not giving much. I have been going to my hairdresser for over 20 years. She is self employed, out of her own home. She gets all of the money I give her. She isn’t paying chair rentals or taking classes.  
 
I pay what I can afford. She knows what our jobs are. And definitely after 20 years she doesn’t expect anything more than what I have always done.

I’ll usually tip $5 but I honestly think tipping is ridiculous. Who determines who gets tipped, why is one job considered worth tipping and not another. I work at a daycare, went to college, don’t make a great wage and am caring for/teaching others people children and I don’t get tipped. Why would cutting hair be more deserving of tipping? Just makes no sense to me.

Are at the customers discretion, period. There should never be any pressure to tip. It is less common in other countries and certain occupations are low income abroad as well.

That must have been many moons ago lol ..I started waitressing in 1988 and all the way through until current I have never been paid less than minimum wage.
