That's because eBrandon is full of boomers. In fact, this whole thread (and most of this website) can be summed up by the phrase "Ok, boomer".  
 
These are the same people that struggle with the fact that the world around them is changing and they are unable or unwilling to keep up with it. These are the same people that have to call their bank for help sending an eTransfer and rant to the guy on the other end for 20 minutes about how technology is ruining things.

so you are saying that 40 years ago kids were walking the streets ogling nudies in a Penthouse mag? Not quite the same as distracted walking.  
Pretty sure there has been serious injuries to people who walk with their nose in their phone so no laughing matter.

I take offence to the e-transfer thing and I'm not a boomer!!!! There's something about e-transfers that just seem wrong, almost like as soon as I hit transfer/send/A.O.K/thumbs up/or whatever it is you hit to complete the deal, my whole bank account will be gone (somehow it's safer when my wife does it for me)....and I need that extra $1.00 I have in my bank account!  
This has been going on for years and will never stop! The kids saying "boomers", will be saying this about their kids and so on and so forth. When I started driving, distracted driving was trying to figure out if the auto-flip on the cassette deck had flipped, then it went to loading you 7 CD's into your 7 disk stereo you had. We drove stoned, drunk, sped, launched our cars over speed humps. Our distraction while walking was playing snakes on our 12" tall Nokia cell phone, or looking at the hot chick across the road, making comments like "hey Chiquita" (but knowing if they ever reciprocated you'd be embarrassed and not know what to say). But as I'm reminded by my wife every time I get mad at my 19y/o for not cleaning up after himself "you were exactly the same if not worse when you were his age. Do you not remember the 30 dishes you bought so you would only have to do them once a month, or the fact that your buddies little sister that had a crush on you, would come and clean your bachelor suite every week for you". It's like freakin clock work she reminds me of this and I know what she's going to say before she even says it! But like I so graciously remind her, "yes, but I've learned from my mistakes and am trying to teach him better".  
So to y'all that are saying "boomers" and y'all that are saying "millennial's" save whatever you're typing somewhere and look back at it in 5/10/15/20yrs from now and reflect on how old y'all are and how y'all sound just like your parents/the generation prior to you!

The chatter of the elder generations aside, I do agree . . . awareness of your surroundings is an asset. And not just people on phones . . . just being aware of whats going on around you, IN GENERAL.  
 
The retail setting is a brilliant example of this. I can't even tell you how often I've seen people not even acknowledge the loud sound of a train of carts close behind them. Back up their vehicle 5 feet before even looking if the coast is clear. Driving into a shared intersection which is also a pedestrian crossing at an unsafe speed without checking if anyone is coming from the sides. If an excited child comes running out from either direction (it happens), that is a bad situation.

So....Ding! Idea for a new smartphone app. The walk/ don't walk sign sends a signal to your smartphone, telling you to walk or to don't walk. That way you don't even have to look up while your tripping over the curb or running into people. I'm going to be rich!!

It's unfortunate, but I find people seem to learn better from experience. You can keep saying to them "don't do this" but often dismiss it until something catastrophic affects them directly. Look at how many people still get charged with dui or distracted driving. It can be frustrating to think of it.  
I can't tell you how many times I've heard/seen someone walk into something headfirst while using their phone. Most of the time they pop right up again embarrassed a little, but not always.

They just don’t care as much about property or savings. I got my first new car when I was 27 and I shared it with my brother. First vehicle was an 82 Chevy truck in 1998 when I was 21, lasted a year (couldn’t afford antifreeze and it over heated daily so I’d just put water in...first sub zero day and I was back to my bike) for a year I rode a bike from 23rd and Vic to 17th Street East and Vic where I earned $487 every 2 weeks working full time. I could go on...but I’ll get to the point...I own 4 houses now, a cottage, a business 20 years later.  
 
Now how many millennials own 2019 Honda civics, silverados, dodge rams, etc? How many have already been to Mexico, Costa Rica, etc? I didn’t see the ocean until I was 38...millennials spend more on phones than I did on rent...spend more on internet than I did on groceries...millennials are just different...they don’t have what they don’t want.

Regardless, this certainly isn't a generational issue. I see plenty of middle age people walking around with their noses in their phones. Sometimes I even have to ask my own parents to put their phones down when we go out to eat.  
 
Regardless, I don't think it's that much of anyone's business what other people do with their phones. If someone is in the road then yes they deserve a honk, but other than that it doesn't matter unless it directly affects you, right?

Have just hit them. Maybe then they will learn responsibility.
