Abbysmum said "I don't disagree with a lot of what your saying. At the end of the day, they are there illegally.
One thing I've heard from American commentators that has made me ponder the situation somewhat is that their system is very broken. They are highly reliant on what basically amounts to indentured servitude to keep their economy chugging along, yet they make it very difficult to enter the country legally. But they have, historically, desperately needed this laboir. So it's never been in their interest to fix the system.
Now that's being weaponized. It's going to be interesting to see what economic impacts this will have, especially with all the confounding factors happening simultaneously. Apparently fruit crops are going unpicked because people are hiding and too scared to go into the fields.
One thing I don't understand is that people assert that illegals are paying into social security etc. How dos that happen? How do businesses submit that to the feds? These people would not have SSNs. In Canada, you can't really do legal payroll without a SIN. I'm wondering if employers there are actually pocketing the money.

The ITN is the answer to your question about taxes.
Keep in mind that if I go to Vegas and win a lump sum of over $1200, the casino holds back a percentage for taxes, even tho I don't have a SSN or an ITN.
