RACISM....WHY???
6/26/2009 at 10:48 AM
I have a problem I need to discuss with everyone. Here is goes, please no one critisize me about this, I don't intend for this thread to get nasty or to offend but I sure do need to vent. First of all, I have been talking with my mother, who lives far north of Brandon, She works in a restaurant in a small town. She is aboriginal. Lately, because of the H1N1 flu being on that reserve up north and the media making it a point to notify everyone the percentage of aboriginals in the hospital suffering from it, She has been the target of some pretty harsh racism. There are other aboriginal women working in the restaurant with her and they are also getting targeted. There have been comments from the non-aboriginal that all the "Indians" on that reserve should just get the flu and die off because it would just be less "Indians" for the rest of the world. There have also been comments about the "Indians" being dirty, not knowing how to wash and not even eating properly. My mother and those others that work there are so stressed out they have even gone to the doctor to make people satisfied so they can say that they have been checked and nothing is wrong with them!!! It makes me disgusted how some people are like that!! My mom is now thinking of quiting her job because her boss don't give a shit, money is money to him. Can anybody tell me, what can she do to stand up for herself and let everyone in that small town see how racist they are being? Is this something that human rights deals with? They make comments about not taking there kids anywhere because "Indians" don't take care of themselves and THEIR kids might catch something from the grocery store. It's frustrating when your mother is phoning you, your four hours away, she's upset and her blood pressure is already bad. Is this a hopeless cause to mention this? What can be done?
