Mr. Philip S. Lee, C.M., O.M. will attend his own 7th Annual Lieutenant Governor's Winter Festival in Brandon this weekend.
This is a city wide celebration of culture through education, cuisine, music and dance in 12 different pavilions. Also described as an excuse for gluttony, and merriment interrupted by intervals of cold hands and feet.
Mr. Lee was born in Hong Kong on the 5th of May, 1944, and in 1962 he came to Canada to study at the University of Manitoba. In those days only sixty students at the University were Chinese and only two of them were female. He claims he only had a date every 30 days.
By the end of his studies Mr. Lee was dating a girl named Anita, unfortunately she was living in Hong Kong at the time. He decided to return to Hong Kong and get married which he and Anita did in March of 1968.
Amid rumors of the British returning the Island back to Main Land China Mr. Lee and his wife Anita returned to Winnipeg where his sister was already living.
He worked for the city of Winnipeg in the water and waste departments from 1967 until 2005.
He was admitted to the Order of Canada in 1999 for his extensive work in Winnipeg's Chinese community. Mr. Lee played a key role in the development of many of the community's landmarks, including the construction of the Chinese Gate between Logan and James avenues.
For decades, Mr. Lee has played an integral role in Winnipeg's cultural community and has been widely recognized for his efforts in promoting a positive cultural awareness among Canadians of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
As such, Mr. Harper considered that he is well prepared to assume this prominent role as the Queen's representative in our province, and will bring an exciting dynamic to this office.
The position of Lieutenant-governor is largely ceremonial and holds very little direct influence over the government of Manitoba.
Mr. Lee, and his wife Anita have three daughters Margaret, Mabel, and Malinda.
