By small family do you mean young children? If so I would recommend the Victoria Inn by the airport - best pool for toddlers IMO.

Try the following hotels:  
 
Fairfield Inn  
-our kids enjoy the pool and they offer free breakfast  
 
Homewood Suites  
- free breakfast, excellent rooms

We just stayed at the Homewood a few nights ago and it was great, got a suite that had a bedroom, so kid went to sleep and we hung out in the living room, which also had a hideabed if needed. Full size fridge, stove top, microwave, dishwasher. Table with a couple chairs. Great free breakfast (waffles, sausage patties, tater tots, croissants with egg, sausage, cheese, toast, cereal, fruits etc) mon-thur they have free supper as well, the night we were there it was nachos, soup, salad, the menu said they have appy nights, Italian, creole, salads etc.  
 
Checkout isn't until 12!  
 
Regular pool, no water slides or anything but we didn't have time to swim anyways. A bit pricier but we will go there again.  
 
Victoria inn has a great pool for younger kids. I've heard the Fairfield has a pretty good pool too. Holiday inn has a pool and play structure.

Best western headingly had a great pool, beach entry with a sprinkler and a tame water slide. The rooms were modern and free breakfast.  
 
Holiday inn airport west has an indoor playstructure, shallow kiddie pool and a basic little kid slide in the regular pool, and fish tanks in the elevators. Kids eat free in the restaurant. Rooms were dated but clean.

Holiday inn on portage has a wickedly cool play structure beside the pool. Really spacious and nice lounging areas around pool and play structure. Seperate shallow kiddy pool for little guys. Good prices, super awesome staff.  
Victoria inn by the airport has a wicked waterslide and a beach style pool (gradual entry to the water). Nice for little ones. Waterslide goes into it's own bath, not the general pool. Kids love the dinosaur theme pool area.  
 
Both hotels have family rooms and are definite do over and over hotel stays. They are both my "go to" locations and preferred hotels of choice.

Fairfield or Vic inn by airport. But I liked the free breakfast offered at Fairfield!

On portage ave is our go to hotel. Great playstructure (kids need socks-they do check), small shallow kids pool and a deeper very basic pool (too deep for a toddler), they do have a few life jackets to use, the pool abd play structure are open till midnight, checkouts at 12 also which is great, ping pong table, air hockey table, large lounging area for parents, kids eat free with adult meal purchase, small lounge with vlts, gym, and PlayStations in the kids theme rooms. The rooms are dated but they have started renos...not sure when those rooms will be ready. The staff is super friendly. They also have free toiletries if you forget. We also enjoy the pool at the Clarion but it is deeper, they do have a small baby pool though. The renovated rooms are very nice. Have had some bad experiences there but were always given a discount of around $30...which would be on par with other regular priced hotels. Victoria Inn does have a good kids pool but we found the hotel dirty. Only stayed there twice.

no comments on the canad inn the forks or Garden city ? I too am looking for a good reasonable hotel must have swimming .. thanks

is pricey and I don't believe it has a pool, at least it didn't have a pool when it opened and it didn't sound like a pool was in their future plans.

Holiday Inn express always good... The viscount uses to be real good too when II was younger..havnt been forever

We always stay at the Vic inn. Pool is great for kids and love that the big water slide doesn't go into the pool.
