Hi. I have never had to travel in a taxi with a small child and am wondering what the rules are to do so. Do taxi's provide you with a car seat if requested? Do you need to provide your own? It would be for a toddler and infant.

Taxis do not provide car seats for your children.

Taxis will not provide a car seat, even if requested  
If you bring one of your own, you are responsible to secure the seat and child in it  
This removes all liabilities from the driver  
Drivers are not required to wear a seatbelt, if they have a customer  
Everyone else, its your choice to wear it or not. But legally you should.

Ha, good luck with that, they are required to wear one regardless if they have a fare or not and that also i:ncludes all their passengers.

This has been discussed on ebrandon before. Legally, you don't NEED to use a carseat in a taxi, but it's a good idea in case of accident!!

They are required to wear one if they are driving alone. However with customer are not required to wear one. Why? No idea but it is the case nonetheless.

That is an exemption that was issued 16 years ago by the taxicab board. The taxicab board is long dissolved and no longer exists. So that piece of paper means nothing. Also the section of The Highway Traffic Act your paper quotes was repealed in 2013. No police officer is going to accept that as an exemption from wearing your seat belt. Just because someone is a taxi driver doesn't mean the rules don't apply. Wear your seat belt.

This may be 16 years old but, until I am shown something in writing that contradicts it, I will believe what is on Government of Manitoba letterhead. I am not saying you are wrong, I just want to see evidence.

That makes no sense! Why would you be required to wear a seatbelt when you are alone, but not while you have a paying passenger with you? That is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard, and I doubt that will get you out of a ticket.  
As for the original OP, I think taxi drivers should have to provide car seats for children, however, they do not. They should however be more than willing to wait for you to install a car seat properly for the safety of your children

So because it's written on old Government of Manitoba letterhead you think it's valid? I hate to break it to you but The Highway Traffic Act supercedes any letter some taxi cab board wrote almost 20 years ago.  
 
Just the simple fact that someone even 16 years ago thought it was ok to tell people not wear a seat belt because your a taxi driver is kind of unbelievable but then again I've seen and read worse memos. But seriously wear your seat belt its the law, even for you cabbies. And no offense but I hope the BPS reads this thread be pretty easy pickings if cabbies think they are exempt from seat belt laws.

Taxi drivers are exempt from wearing a seatbelt when carrying a fare. I remember reading something quite a while ago about it being for safety in case they are attacked. The driver can more easily defend themselves or escape if they're not seat belted in.

To answer the OP, no you are not required by law to use car seats/booster seats but it is highly recommended.

The reason a taxi driver doesn't need to wear a seat belt while they have a customer is because the driver would be unable to properly defend himself if attacked by the passenger. It has been a proven thing.

You are presented with physical evidence yet you KNOW better. I am certainly willing to update my knowledge base when presented with evidence. Have you the evidence to do so? Seriously!!! I am always open to change.

Anybody who chooses to flaunt the law of the land regarding seat belt use STILL obeys the law of physics if they are in an accident: objects in motion remain in motion until brought to rest by some force. :-D
