Day trip to America

I know this has probably been covered before but I cannot remember..
Does anyone know what the rules are for going over the border for less that 24 hours?
I know you cannot bring back alcohol or tobacco but are you allowed a dollar value in goods? Also, are there any rules specific to medications? I know not to bring anything that is not approved here but I am curious about regular OTC meds. I tried looking it up on the border services site but didn't really find anything.
