Looking for a trip under $1000, any ideas??

My roommate and I are hoping to escape the cold of winter sometime within the next month or two here and we are both students, so we are looking for somewhere tropical under $1000 (after tax!). Anyone have any advice on where to go, where not to go, etc etc. We have searched online for hours on various travel sites, but we seem to get very mixed reviews on every hotel we look at. we have narrowed it down to Cuba, Dominican or Mexico because they seem to be the most reasonably priced these days. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
