Once again we here are passed up and have to drive to Winnipeg to catch a flight.

Maybe someday we will have someone who offers service on a permanent basis from right here at Brandon Airport

I want to visit those cities now, just because I can! Glad to see this all inclusive price (except baggage checking).
The price of the Winnipeg trip is minor when you add up the savings. I am booked!

would you think Brandon would be on the starting city lineup? But then again on their Facebook page, everyone thinks their city should be on the list.

And what would make Newleaf Airlines more permanent than Westjet Encore? And on Jan. 16, the second Westjet flights start from here.

Sadly there will be people who will still complain that the prices are still to high.

Westjet have been permanently offering 1 flight a day to Calgary since Sept 2013 and as Trevor B said, the 2nd PERMANENT flight will start in the next couple weeks, so 2 permament flights every day from Brandon. Also I think once the airport is updated and capable of handling bigger planes and more people, a flight East will be on the cards.

what the prices will be after the introductory fares end.

NewLeaf is also just 'wet-leasing' aircraft and crews from Flair Air. Flair Air only has 5 737-400's. So that's why their cities and routes are limited.

really what's meant by permanent anyways? The airline will stay here for as long as the routes profitable. The same with any business, if it's not profitable, it closes.

some test fights using Newleaf and Westjet to Abbottsford with one adult. Looking at the dates on Mar. 4 (Friday) to the 6 (Sunday).

On Westjet, there are multiple flights. The cheapest. And flights on those days. The cost was $370.

On NewLeaf, there are no flights on those days. I would have to leave on Wed. Mar. 2 and return on the following Wed the 9th. And cost $232. But then I would have to add in extra hotel costs and work days missed.

So is it cheaper? Did anyone see the fees for luggage on NewLeaf?

I guess if your going with only yourself and personal item you will save. But start adding on all of the extra fees, you will see the fares skyrocket.

If you're a frequent flyer, you'll get that this could be a good thing.

that $232 was only myself and a personal item. Since I will be a week waiting for my return, I will need a carry-on and a checked bag. $35 for the carry-on and $35 for the checked bag and additional $70. That brings it to $302. Now I want to select my seat in near the front, another $20. Now it's at around $322.

On Westjet, I could get away with one carry on bag, which is free on Westjet. My seat selection is free 24 hours prior when checking in online. And that flight would still be $370

But with the NewLeaf flight I would need 7 nights in a hotel and what ever else for the week while in Abbotsford. While with Westjet, since they have daily flights, I would need just the 2 nights for the time I want to be there. They also have In-Flight Entertainment with Satellite TV.

So in the long run, Westjet would be cheaper for me. You will have to calculate carefully.

It is good news even if you never step on a new leaf plane. Westjet and Air Canada are already dropping prices on the routes that new leaf is flying. Budget airlines aren't new and aren't for everyone but they do help the consumer.
We are all paying for checked bags now and they are cracking down on carry on size compliance at westjet and air canada.

Good example of how competition in the industry can be good for the consumer in at least the short-term.... Westjet is now offering ridiculously low fares (out of Winnipeg, Regina) to Canadian cities like Kelowna, Vancouver, Toronto, Halifax:

Not quite hitting Brandon, but it looks like there's a scenario or two in February where you can do Vancouver round trip for under $350, Kelowna for $311.. pretty darn good in their own right.

Depending on the state of the industry when airport upgrades are done in Brandon, you do have to wonder what kind of sniff we might see from other airlines. Hard to get too greedy when we're days away from doubling the amount of flights in/out of the city in a day. At the same time is there a chance of it being a case of "careful what you wish for".... if a fly-by-night airline comes in and heavily undercuts, could it weaken Westjet's business case for flying out of here?

if my Westjet costs are pre or post lowering. And the Westjet flight has a connection in Edmonton.

But with NewLeaf's weekly schedule, you will have to spend an entire week, and can't go for just a few days. And that will drive up over all costs. If your original intent is to spend the week then fine, it's cheaper.

But if you plan to spend a few days, your going with the airline that has daily flights. You will really need to check all options.

Thank WESTJET for flying to Brandon. Even though you may be more expensive to fly with, I will stick with you to keep this service to Brandon possible for the rest of Western Canada. I will end up saving on gas, food and parking if I fly local. Say no to New Leaf!!

Interestingly Westjet a day later still offering the cheap price matched flights out of Wpg... $176 round trip Toronto into May, etc.
