could/would you be able to walk away?

We have seen it all before, someone too scared/stupid/whatever to walk away from an abusive relationship (either verbal, physical, sexual or all three).
My question is what would you do if this was your friend? Does your answer vary as to whether it's a male or female friend? And if the victim was yourself, would you honestly be able to walk away, even if kids were involved or this was your highschool sweetheart, etc?
