May 4th 1841 was the birth date of Alexander Fleming (1841 – 1897).
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied for a Degree in Medicine at Glasgow University, and also at Harvard. In 1863 he immigrated to Fredrickton, New Brunswick and practiced medicine at Sackville, New Brunswick for ten years.
In 1881 he brought his family to Brandon, Manitoba, (John W. Fleming, Mayor of Brandon 1905: 1906 – 1911: 1912: 1913, was his son) to become Brandon’s first Medical Director, and Pharmacist, he set up his first practice in a tent.
He started the first Drug Store in Brandon, (the sign from that store is in the basement of Daly House Museum).
Besides being an advocate for the establishment of a permanent hospital, Fleming was the organizer of the first School Board in 1881, a founder, and active member, and President of the Manitoba and North West Farmers’ Union, and was its first Chairman.
Dr. Fleming was also on the first Board of Governors of the Brandon General Hospital in 1883, and became a Staff member in 1891 when it opened.
Dr. Fleming died in Brandon on November 26th 1897. Fleming School in Brandon was named in his Honour.
